I’ve
been in a car accident before in the winter with my father. Being
stuck in the middle of the road in one of the worst seasons was one
of the worst things I have ever had to experience. Neither myself nor
my father were hurt, there was just damage to his vehicle. The
accident could have very much been avoided if everyone involved took
their time. Ever since that accident, when I drive I am very cautious
especially in the winter. Winter should not be the only season where
people take precaution while driving; it should happen whenever one
decides to get in the driver side of a vehicle. The number of deaths
from car accidents has unfortunately grown tremendously over the
years but that number can decrease if people follow the rules of
safety for driving.
In
order to reduce the number of deaths related to driving people can
follow some simple safety rules. One way to reduce the deaths is by
slowing down and preparing to eventually stop when a yellow light is
present. Now this may sound like common sense but not many stop at
yellow lights. Yellow lights are looked at for some as rushed green
lights. This should not be the case. If people learn to slow down
when they see yellow lights then many of the deaths related to
driving would decrease. Another way that we as people can reduce the
number of deaths related to driving is by giving the road our full
attention. There are so many people who think that they are pros at
driving and do not need to focus on the road because they have
“experience”. Not saying that having experience is bad but there
are so many others on the road with little experience. Those with
little experience may be very cautious in using what they learned and
may follow every driving rule that they learned. So if those with
more experience use the same lessons they were taught then we are all
on the same page and following the same rules. There are no shortcuts
to driving, that is what we all need to remember.
I
am not a perfect driver at all. There are times where I catch myself
but I always make sure to correct my mistakes. Correcting my mistakes
is one step that I can take to make myself a better and safer driver.
I can also help others to do the same by being their second pair of
eyes when I am in the car with them. I always try to be cautious when
I am in the car with others. Little things like reminding them of
their seatbelts or telling them their speed helps.
If
we all put forth the effort then the roads will slowly but surely
become safer. We have to remember that we were all required to take
road tests for a reason. That reason was to teach us the safety of
driving. Safety comes first.
