Driving is a Responsibility

For driving to be
a safe experience, one must know how to be safe on the road
regardless of the technological advancement of vehicles today. Driver
education is crucial because drivers should not only know the rules
of the road but know about their car, how to avoid behaviors that
could cause accidents, and what to do in cases of emergency. Drivers
education is not in all schools or always available but I believe it
should be because it allows drivers the resources to gain knowledge
and practice the skills they learn. Drivers ed is important to
develop responsible drivers that has the knowledge to protect
themselves and others.

I believe steps
such as drivers ed, properly managing the vehicle, and
creating and ensuring the laws of driving as well as consequences of
reckless driving can reduce deaths due to vehicular accidents. One
should learn all that is necessary to be a safe driver by following
the updated laws and taking classes if available. A driver should
learn their vehicle and how to tell when certain things are needed,
which can help alleviate problems that may occur while driving. I
believe laws should be updated to reflect the most common
contributors to accidents regarding distracted driving, such as
texting and driving.

I have
experienced being in an accident before a few years ago. I live in a
rural area so it’s not unusual to drive on dirt or back roads but it
is important to watch for livestock and other animals that could come
from the woods. We were all talking and driving on a back road we
normally take, then suddenly before we could notice the deer that
was heading for us we were hit by a deer. The deer had smashed the
hood and bumper in but luckily it had not come through the window but
still caused so much damage that the car was totaled. We may have
been able to be more aware if not for the distraction of talking.

I can take steps
as a driver myself to drive safely and ensure the safety other
drivers on the road. The first step I would take is making sure I
know the state and general laws of the road. I would then take care
of anything that could be a potential problem during driving. I would
change the radio to my preferred station and lower the volume as to
not to become a distraction. Also I would take the precaution of
placing my devices on silent and any important items in a secure
place. Ultimately, I will take the step of not taking my eyes off the
road or my hands off the wheel and making sure passengers know and
follow the rules of the car as to not to become a distraction,
therefore, ensuring their own safety. These are the steps I would
take to be a safe driver but there are many steps we all including
myself can take and reduce reckless driving.
