Once
a person reaches a certain age, they begin to have a yearning to be
behind the driver’s seat. There are others out there who will not
live to see that day due to reckless driving. For many of us, we
refuse to believe the threat of driving because of our ‘invincible
mindset,’ which is only strengthened when inside of a two-ton
vehicle. By taking the time to understand the potential threats that
are affiliated with driving, then numerous more people could leave
their driveway and return, having avoided severe injuries or death
from reckless driving.

Last
year, I had the unfortunate privilege of being a part of a
reenactment called “Shattered Dreams”. With this performance,
students of my school and I witnessed some of our fellow peer’s
drink and drive. This action had a domino effect, because those peers
that chose to drink and drive crashed into a car full of innocent
students whose only fault was studying for an upcoming test. Students
in both cars suffered not only from gore filled injuries, but some of
our closest friends were seen struggling at an attempt to breathe
their last breathes. I firmly support this intense imitation to be
shown not only to schools all around the world but to workplaces as
well. A blindfold was removed from my eyes that I was unaware that I
had, and I know that others will be revealed to the effects of
driving in order to reduce car related deaths.

Personally,
I have never been in a car accident, but I have been on the road when
others around me were driving recklessly. During these experiences, I
find myself present in the moment and holding my breath- dreading
what may come next. I feel helpless while my eyes are glued to the
individual. Due to having been a spectator in these dangerous
circumstances, I am very cautious while I am not only driving on the
road, but also with who I choose to get in a car with.

There
are countless procedures that can be taken in order to participate
and promote safety on the road. An example is waiting to drive if one
is feeling over emotional, intoxicated, or even if one notices their
phone screen light up from an incoming call or notification from a
social media app. Not only are these procedures going to implement a
more safe environment for the person following them, but others
around will reap the benefits as well by either following in their
footsteps or evading a possible collision that may have happened if
the individual did not follow these safety methods.
