Importance of Driver Education

Sundas Riffat

I am a second year international student majoring in informational technology in Lexington North Carolina. I decided to major in information technology in this program because it is one of the top five biggest fields in the United States as well as the whole world. I feel because of this I can easily make an amazing impact in this industry along with my community as there is so much potential.

Not too long ago, I was also a teenager. I was young and energetic, willing to take on any challenge that came my way. I recall it as being a super fun time with family and friends. Being super ambitious at a young age is actually a good characteristic for a healthy development. I was fortunate enough that I always had my brothers or even a family member to drive me around town. Although I had many friends who chose to drive themselves to school or nearby cities. As a young woman, I believe we have equal if not more potential than men, so limiting one gender to do the sole driving is definitely not a reasonable solution.

As far as motor vehicle accidents, my aunt who lives in Northern Virginia and I love her dearly was involved in one not too long ago. She was diving a small compact car, with the latest features and super gas efficient model Honda Fit. Even with all the airbag technology and high safety standards, she was hit from the rear end. Most standard Honda Fit are composed of metal unlike some other models like Pontiac which have a carbon fiber composition. When the accident occurred, it was pure metal on metal collision, so the force ended up being a great deal on the delicate human body. I was shocked to hear about her involved in an accident, so I was very careful when I decided to call her a few days later to talk about the event as I knew I had to approach it in a manner to make her feel anxious talking about it. I could tell by her voice that it was most likely a traumatic event. We care most about the health of everyone involved regardless of the damage to the cars or money lost.

It took my aunt a few months to recover fully after her accident and get back to normal speed. The weeks following she complained of trouble sleeping along with not wanting to drive short distances even to the local grocery store. Her aches and pains eventually subsided with lots of rest and comfort from many family members.

As far as motor vehicle accidents, they can happen at any given time and to any one young or old, so being experienced to a degree does not prevent from being involved in a collision. However, circumstantial factors such as being distracted, being intoxicated, over speeding, and neglect for not wearing appropriate eye glass or seat belts are just a few of the many reasons that lead to fatal accidents.

Regarding finances in a car accidents, It is my understanding that many if not all of the states require vehicles to be insured in order for them to issue Driver’s License or even Registration / Title work. That is a great policy because it helps both parties involved find common ground and avoid going to big financial trouble by having both vehicles insured by paying monthly premiums. However, I do realize that with such advancements in the technology sector we must invest some of the funds into helping reduce the amounts of accidents that occur on a yearly basis. This can be done in many ways. We can start by improving the roads and bridges. We can also maintain the speed on the highways in the safe range of 55-70 mph that allows for the person in the driving seat with the most control.  Also, continue with the strategy of having heavy fines for anyone who does not stop for school buses, and also make sure our school buses fleet are all upgraded to the latest 2 years and the older ones are most likely to malfunction. These are just a few of the simple strategies we must continue in the years ahead.
