The
Importance of Safe Driving

Annually,
there are about 37,000 fatalities resulting from car crashes in the
United States. That would be about 101 deaths per day. I believe the
only way to reduce this number of fatalities is for people to be far
more educated in drivers ed. The importance of drivers
education is huge. It is how people gain knowledge on what their poor
actions can result in and how to make sure that they are a safe
driver. The more people that are educated in this area, the less
dangerous drivers are out on the road.

I
believe that after 10-15 years of having a drivers license, people
should be required to do a follow up test, to ensure they still are
aware of how to drive safely. I also think that once a person turns
60 years old, they should be required to do another behind the wheel
test, as when a person ages they experience some vision loss and
slower cognitive abilities. Elderly people take up 7% of all two-car
accidents, reportedly. Although it is not a high percentage, they
still take part and I have seen many elderly drivers on the road that
drive unsafely. Also, I think that there should be more cops
patrolling highways and roads so that people will be more on alert
when they are driving and so that cop can catch a unsafe driver as
soon as they spot them.

I
personally have seen both my friends and family text and drive and I
try to tell them to stay off to ensure not only their safety but
their passengers safety as well. I also have been in the car with a
friend who should have never gotten her license. She swerved a lot
with no regard to the people around her and has used her phone while
driving as well. It scares me to see that even people I know drive
unsafely. I do not think people fully understand what their actions
can result in.

To
ensure I am a safe driver, I will make sure I do not go on my phone
and only answer important calls with bluetooth, if bluetooth is not
available, I would not answer at all. I will also make sure I am
aware of my surroundings and report any people I see that are driving
recklessly. I think that it is very important everyone on the road
takes these precautions as well. Everyone that drives needs to be
well educated on how important it is to be a safe driver to help
decrease the number of car crashes.
