Distracted Driving
Car
accidents are the leading cause of death in the category of
unintentional injury, causing approximately 1.25 million deaths
annually. This is a well-known fact. Car accidents still happen
every day due to preventable things. They have become so common that
people are used to them instead of thinking of ways they can be
prevented.
There
are a couple of precautions that can be taken to prevent car
accidents. First off, everyone knows about the dangers of texting
and driving but not that many people do anything in their personal
lives to prevent it. Many people continue to use their phones while
driving because they say to themselves “oh that will never happen
to me” or “oh I won’t check it” when in reality those are not
true. There are a couple of ways to prevent using your phone while
driving. The first of which is turning on the “do not disturb while
driving” feature on your cellphone. Many phones have this feature
and it will automatically recognize when you’re driving and mute
all notifications until it recognizes you have stopped. This is a
great feature because it’s automatic and you won’t forget to turn
it on. Some people would argue, “Well what if there’s an
emergency?” If there is someone in the car with you, you can give
them your phone so you’re not distracted. They can answer any
emergency notifications that you may receive. I personally do this
for my parents. If they receive a notification, I will check it for
them so they don’t get distracted. If you are super prone to using
your phone, I’d recommend completely shutting it off until you
arrive safely at your destination.
Another
risk while driving is also very well-known and that’s driving under
the influence of drugs or alcohol. Many people know about this risk
but continue to go about their lives doing these things. Obviously,
the best way to prevent driving under the influence is to not consume
drugs or alcohol in the first place. Not only are they extremely
unhealthy but they can get you killed in more ways than one. If
you’re out with a group of people than designate someone to be the
driver for the night. That person will agree to not drink at all and
drive everyone home safely. If you’re by yourself then call someone
ahead of time to pick you up and get you home safely. Driving under
the influence and texting and driving are by far the most dangerous
and cause the most deaths.
Another
thing that causes accidents is simply getting distracted while
driving. This also includes driving while very emotional. Your mind
will be on what you’re feeling and why and not on your driving. Do
whatever it takes to keep your driving as safe and distraction-free
as possible. The reward of staying safe and living a long, healthy
life is better than the risk of losing your life.
