The
Importance of Safe Driving

All kids want to do
is grow up, and something that comes along with growing up is
driving. When they are transitioning from teenagers to young adults,
one of the “rights of passage” is getting their license. Along
with receiving the right to drive, there’s much responsibility that
comes with it. A few days before I started drivers ed, I
thought, “What’s the point in this? I already know how to drive for
the most part and it’s basically all common sense,” but little
did I know that it would be a very impactful part of my life. They
taught me that it’s more than just looking both ways, but making
sure you’re one hundred percent safe to go. They also hit the
texting and driving part hard. In this day in age, this is one of the
most important topics because technology keeps growing and growing.
When the instructors told us the stats about the number of deaths
involving this I was shocked. It’s very crucial to teach kids this
age about this because they are very impressionable. Something new
drivers and even old drivers can do in order to stop lethal crashes
is keeping your phone on silent and not being tempted to look at it
while behind the wheel. They can also listen to the radio or a CD or
something like that, rather than playing music from a phone. This can
help by reducing the temptation of taking your eyes off the road to
glance at your phone to switch the song. I personally have never been
in an accident before, but my father has. When he and his friends
were newer drivers, they were speeding down a road for fun. The
driver lost control and ran the car off the road. Luckily, there were
no deaths, but my dad had to go to the hospital and get stitches in
his head. Along with the physical damage, there was also emotional
damage. A few of the passengers waited a long while before they could
get behind the wheel again. For me personally, something I can do to
keep me safe is to keep my phone tucked away in my purse so I will
not be tempted to look at it. Another thing that I can do is keep my
radio at a lower tone so it does not distract me as I drive. One last
thing I can do is, even though I can drive with my friends, I will
never try to impress them by speeding or racing other cars so I will
not put my life, their lives, or the other drivers lives, in danger.
