commitment to volunteering at Open Bible Church of Kendall has been
my most significant service endeavor. What inspired me to take on
this role was the first time I passed by the streets of downtown
Miami and realized how many homeless people wandered all over the
city. I decided I wanted to be a light of hope to everyone in need
and make a difference in their lives.
started officially volunteering in January of 2016 and committed
myself to working with the homeless, senior citizens and orphan kids.
Our outreach events take place twice a month, usually the first
Tuesday and last Thursday. We go to downtown Miami and provide
clothing, hygiene products and food to the less fortunate ones. One
of our greatest activities each year is the visit to the elderly,
where we give them blankets and a sewed hat. The best part is not
offering them material support, but making them have an enjoyable
experience. Some people from our team disguise themselves as clowns
and put up a show in the senior home, entertaining each patient and
making them feel valuable and cherished. As volunteers, we also
donate toys for orphan kids, and support people living under
penurious conditions in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Honduras and
major challenge we face during our service is risking our own safety.
The streets form downtown Miami where we visit the homeless people
are very dangerous, given that many of them are drugged or drunk.
However, we are genuinely interested in helping the needy, and we are
willing to face challenges along the way. Although we have reached
the lives of many, we have also been hugely impacted with this
service endeavor. Every time we have helped or encouraged someone, we
have gotten to experience one of the greatest human satisfactions,
which is to give genuinely without expecting anything in return. The
outreach events have taught us to appreciate and be thankful for
everything we have. Even our most insignificant belongings could be a
treasure to someone else.
My major service
contribution can be considered forward looking, for it will inspire
new people to contribute to a good cause and make a difference. Our
team of volunteers has already integrated other churches and
organizations to our effort. We have received help from different
companies like Miami Airlines and have been given donations of toys
for the kids in Christmas. We are seeking to foster in the world a
desire to be compassionate, committed and willing to help the less
Although my plan is to become a neurologist, I will continue to
support the homeless, senior citizens and orphan kids of my
community. Since my desire has always been to be helpful, I am glad I
will be able to do so while working as a doctor. Whether I continue
helping through medical treatment or through donations to the needy,
I will have the moral satisfaction of having a positive impact in the
lives of others.
