Scholarship – “In the Driver’s Seat”
Responsibility of Driving
countless new drivers get behind the wheel, completely unaware of the
risks and consequences they take on while in the driver’s seat.
Each turn and bend in the road presents a new opportunity for
disaster, but without driver education, there would be no way to know
this. As such, driver education is crucial to ensure the safety of
drivers, especially new drivers, as well as everyone else on the
to dmvedu.org, about 34,000 people die every year due to driving,
which is more than the deaths of American soldiers in both the Iraq
and Afghanistan wars put together. This is 34,000 people too many.
Driver education might not be able to stop every one of these deaths,
but ensuring that all drivers have the knowledge and understanding to
grasp the true responsibility they hold behind the wheel is
imperative in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving.
driver education, there are many other steps that can be taken to
reduce the number of deaths related to driving. One example is to
further promote PSAs and other messages about the dangers of drinking
while driving. Drinking while driving is a major cause of car
accidents, and anything that can be done to stop this serious issue
will greatly reduce the number of deaths due to driving. In addition,
further spreading the message of the dangers of texting while driving
will also reduce the number of deaths due to driving, as it, along
with drunk driving, plays a large role in traffic-related deaths.
I have never been in a car accident, and I have never seen my friends
or family members driving irresponsibly. However, I have seen others
on the road in front of me driving very irresponsibly, weaving in and
out of lanes and running through red lights. This scares me, as
although I have been lucky not to have witnessed any crashes happen,
I know that each time someone drives recklessly, it could very easily
happen. As such, I believe that driver education is important to
reduce reckless driving, as reckless driving can lead to serious
crashes and death within the blink of an eye.
as a driver myself, I always do everything I can do be a safe,
educated, and responsible driver. Some steps I take include always
turning off my phone before driving, not driving with any other
passengers so I am not distracted, and always making sure that my
headlights are on. To help others become safer on the road, I can
support driver education for everyone who drives, because nobody
should be out on the road without understanding the risks and danger
of driving first.
