Driving is a part of daily
life. Though trains and planes are used for traveling longer
distances, cars are without a doubt the most used vehicle in America
when it comes to transportation. However, this also means that many
lives are lost because of car accidents. Accidents occur every day,
and at least 30,000 lives are lost per year (in America) because of
them. This can be reduced by doing several things: enforce turn
signals, have a “phone-locking” system, and in the future have
driverless cars.

Driver education has done a
lot to make people aware of traffic safety. Although rules may seem
like a buzzkill, the rules of the road are meant to keep people
alive. Turn signals are part of this instruction. They are the basic
means in which you communicate with other drivers. However, many
people forget about them and just turn or merge without a second
thought. Though it is impossible for the police to be everywhere,
they should go around and check for turn signals a lot more. This
way, people will be more willing to put on their turn signals and
avoid accidents.

Another large driving problem
is the use of phones while driving. Though it is illegal to text and
drive, it is still a widespread issue. One possible solution to this
is a type of phone locking system. Once one enter their car (either
through manual or automatic activation) their phone will be locked so
that they cannot use it while driving. Shut off phones also work, but
they take a long time to turn on. Though business phone calls/texts
are important, they are not worth risking your life on the road. This
locking system will allow for easy reconfiguration without much
wasted time.

In the possibly near future,
driverless cars will be perfected. With these upgraded vehicles, cars
will be able to travel anywhere under a program without human
control. Because these cars will be controlled by a database, all
driverless cars would be controlled in this way, which means less
accidents and less traffic. Cars wouldn’t have to worry about human
error as it would be programmed to know streets and the location of
other vehicles. Accidents and traffic would be minimalized as human
emotion would be taken out of the picture, which in turn means less
speeding and last minute decisions. I have been in an accident where
I was exiting the freeway, but a person swerved onto the ramp and hit
the front of my car. Thank goodness no one died, but faster speeds
and less reaction time could’ve turned the situation worse.
Driverless cars would stop this nonsensical situations as the cars
would do all the work.

Though it is impossible to
wipe out all car accidents, there are ways to reduce them. This
includes enforcing turn signals, creating a phone “lock” system,
and driverless cars. As an individual, I will continue to use turn
signals, not text while driving, and be aware of my surroundings.
