Why I Volunteer

I have been
volunteering since I was about 13 years old and it gives me so much
joy. Doing good for other people should be something that as humans,
we should naturally do. It shows that we are empathetic beings, and I
know if I couldn’t help myself I would love to get assistance from
somewhere else if possible. I am on the executive board of the
African Student Organization as the Community Service Chair. My role
is to facilitate community service opportunities for the members. I
am focused on Baltimore City as it is one of the most impoverished
places, considering Maryland has a few of the riches counties in the
whole country. In the past, I have done soup kitchens and worked in
retirement homes to just give the people companionship. I have just
acquired this role as Community Service Chair, so next school year I
plan on implementing “Adopt-A-Mile” which is just picking a
street in Baltimore and going to clean it up. Also, soup kitchens,
clothes/necessity bags/shoes for the homeless.

I haven’t been
able to volunteer as much as I would like to because I am a college
student and school work tends to take over, which is why I chose to
run for a position that would allow me to do what I love to do when I
want to do it. I plan on being a doctor in about 9 years and I will
be dealing with all kinds of people from different walks of life. My
whole purpose is to save lives and do everything I can to ensure that
these people are living healthily. This is not limited to just
physical health, it includes mental and emotional health as well. A
lot of these people that are out on the streets are more than likely
dealing with more than one health problem and it is important to
know how to care for them. As humans, we have the power to change
anything, so why not start with ourselves. We must love each other to
help each other grow and have a fighting chance in this world. That
is why I volunteer.
