Currently, homelessness is a major issue in America, therefore I take pride into giving back in an effective way possible. I have participated in donating necessities such as body lotion, body wash, baby wipes, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpastes, hand sanitizers, and etc. After collecting those items, I get together with the council that I joined in 2014, Riverside County fifth district Youth Advisory Council, and we begin the process of creating care packages. Once the packages are assembled, we create inspiring messages or include quotes to brighten the receiver’s day. I find this method effective because we want to show that they are enabled to reach out for help and that there are many people in the community that cares. When the packages are well put together and neat, we load them up into boxes and deliver them to multiple homeless shelters specifically for teens, men, women, and even to homeless war veterans. This can also be viewed as us giving back for the service we received in order for us to have independence for our country.

Reflecting back to my experience, I realized I have learned the hardships and tragedies of homelessness right in our communities. Fact is, many people unfortunately perish from this issue due to the lack of resources that we have. I also get an opportunity of listening to different stories and most of them encourage me to appreciate the things I have and most importantly, to take advantage of the education that is offered to me. I am glad to know that this experience of volunteerism has benefited a part of my community, and that I was also able to gain more knowledge of the various issues in it.
