Community service has always been something that I have enjoyed and actively participated in. I have joined many clubs, from Build On to National Honor Society, which dealt with community service as the focus. The services range on a wide spectrum of activities and usage. One of the services can be about stacking and organizing books for different schools while another service can be fixing up broken homes. These services bring up the big picture of how there is so many places that need people like me to help them out. It also brings up the point that one person can make a difference, no matter how small. I may be stacking books for only two hours and it may have been a small stack, but at least this stack has been done by someone. Community service is the act of helping in any small or big way as possible so that the job is closer to being done. This job is the fulfillment of a service to our very own community to make it a better place in time for tomorrow.
Community service, to me, isn’t just something to help my community but also a bonding experience. I have made many friends from all my community services. When a group of people wake up at 5 in the morning to get to a service where they all must work together to pass out water and other beverages to runners, it creates a bond of comradeship between the volunteers. Finding people who share the same interest as you can only be done by going out and doing what you want. My school has a requirement of 200 volunteer hours, so I started doing community services to get those hours over and done with. Now here I am, in my senior year, with over 500 hours of community services.
I have learned all my valuable skills in socializing by going to these services, like how to talk to new people, how to stay professional, and how to have fun without any judgement about yourself. This passion of mine is what I am hoping to bring to Michigan State University campus. I hope I can enjoy more and more chances to stay active by doing services on the campus. I hope to join a club or sorority that deals with community service. I also want to start my own organization on services.
