others has always been an important value to me. During the last
three years, I have volunteered by serving the underserved and
underprivileged members of my community through my high school’s
community service club (Interact Club), of which I currently serve as
president.  Throughout my high school career, I have spent
approximately 100 hours per year participating as a volunteer. As a
volunteer and as the current Interact Club president, I have had many
responsibilities such as: organizing various can food drives,
organizing a crayon and coloring book drive for the local children’s
hospital, planning a project for a science day at a local community
center serving those in poverty, and creating and delivering holiday
cards for the elderly, amongst various other projects.

far, my biggest challenge as a volunteer has been my experience
during a missions trip to a homeless community, known as “Skid Row”
in Pasadena, California.  As a volunteer, my job was to hand out
basic supplies such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and toilet paper.  I
had expected the Skid Row residents to be angry at their conditions,
however, I saw the opposite to be true. I immediately noticed the
gratitude of each resident as they humbly accepted the supplies we
had brought to them. They were in the worst conditions, yet they were
thankful.  I saw people smiling, and children playing with the
little they possessed.  This experience challenged me face my
own preconceived notions as to what a homeless person should be like,
and I learned that even in the worst circumstances there can be joy,
and that I should carry that into my life.

aligns with my career goal to pediatrician.  Through my
volunteer work, I have developed compassion and empathy for others,
which will be an integral aspect of my work as a doctor.  The
volunteer activities in which I participate are “forward looking”
as they are preparing me for my future as they provide me insight in
how my compassion can encourage and help others.
hope that through my volunteer activities, others will also be
inspired to serve those in need.

I hope that in the future, as I reflect back on my life and on my
experiences as a volunteer, that I will have the contentment in
knowing that I made a difference in the lives of others. Knowing that
I have a purpose in life and that I am able to fulfill needs within
my community, brings me the most satisfaction as a volunteer and as a
human. Through volunteering, I have learned to appreciate the
differences in others and that as an individual I am able to make a
positive influence and impact in the world.
