As Muhammad Ali once said, “Service
to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” Ever since I was in sixth grade, volunteerism has had a place in my heart. The day
I applied for my school’s philanthropy club was the day I began to
understand the true impact of volunteering in my community as well as
the impact it has on myself.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a volunteer can be defined as someone who
expresses a willingness to undertake a service. In my eyes, I view
volunteering has a way of cleansing the soul. We have grown up in a
generation where things such as a house, a job, and paying the bills
have become our main priorities. Society has forgotten about those
who can’t make ends meet, immigrants who are escaping the tragedies
of war, or those who don’t have access to something as important as
education. We have been living in our own little bubble without
thinking to take of our community. For these reasons, I decided to
take action and start to give back to my community.
I have a variety of volunteering experiences such as volunteering for the Trail of
Lights, South by Southwest, or even at the Central Texas Food Bank.
The Trail of Lights is a community-wide celebration of christmas
lights and cheer. During the duration of this event, I was
responsible for helping children write letters to Santa. The feeling
of instilling the Christmas spirit in children and adults alike
brought about a feeling of gratitude and true happiness within
myself. During South by Southwest, an event celebrating the
interactive, music, and film industries, I was responsible for
distributing promotional materials to those who came for the duration
of the event. I was given the rare opportunity to collaborate with so
many different people who came from all walks of life. Lastly, at the
Central Texas Food Bank, I was given the opportunity to sort dry food
to give back to the poor. Knowing that that day I was helping to feed
hundreds of people boosted my self confidence as well as made me feel
thankful for the life that I live today.
With all of these experiences, not only is it uplifting for the soul, but it is also is
beneficial to society. Besides helping the community, volunteering
enhances the collaboration and teamwork in a society. It welcomes
diversity in terms of race, religion, ethnicity, age, and even
personality. Volunteering is so beneficial and even more fun with
friends. I wish it was required that everyone volunteer because it
honestly is an experience that should not be missed. With the 46
hours of community service that I have already committed, I intend to
match that by the end of my senior year because I truly enjoy giving
my time and energy to my family, peers, friends, and community.
In conclusion, volunteerism is a huge part of my life and I will always be committed to it.
