The most impact I did, was giving food to the people who are
homeless. A few times, we have bought the food and went to two areas
with the most homeless people. I felt like I was making a small
difference for these people. I loved looking at them being grateful
for the food. I did not know these people helped each other so much.
The people who had gotten food would sometimes grab an extras plate
for a person who was not there and some even referred us a place
where there are more people who are hungry. It was very eye-opening
that these people cared for each other and would help each other.
Another volunteer experience was working at the library since the
beginning 2017. My schedule ranged from twice a week to once a month.
According to my volunteer report, I have volunteered for 187.12 hours
my whole time at the library. I had shelved many books, helped
patrons located items, and I had helped in many events such as the
book sale and free programs. I always had the trouble of socializing
with people, so, I thought volunteering here would increase my social
skills. I am now able to go up to people to ask for help and I have
more courage to help them too.
For many years, I have been fascinated about the human brain and the
behavior of people. I believed that being surrounded by many people I
would be able to observe what made people tick. I am more interested
in how and why children acted the way they do. In result, I applied
to the library and chose my major as Psychology in college. I thought
that by volunteering at the library I would understand children more
and learn how to talk and play with them. My career goal is to either
be a psychologist or an Occupational Therapist. I knew being involved
in the field of psychology required interacting with many people.
Since I needed practice with my social skills, I decided to put
myself out there because people tend to change when they are in
different environment. Over the couple of years, I have become more
outgoing and more happy with myself and the world.
I consider “forward looking” as imaging what my future will look
like based on the present. Before, I have only been more focused on
myself, but, after volunteering I have noticed the conditions of
other people’s lives. I have seen many people struggle to get food
from any place to satisfy their stomachs. In a few years, I believe
that I have actually made a difference in this world. I was able to
help the employees of the library and the patrons. In result, I want
to make a change in the lives of those who need help. This encouraged
me to find more opportunities to help and find methods that can help
thousands of people, not just a few hundred.
