Throughout my four
year tenure in high school, I have repeatedly volunteered with an
organization called Matthew’s Helping Hands. This organization
focuses on positively impacting the lives of children with special
needs by hosting events every month. These events are full of games,
craft making, and endless fun. I chose to volunteer with this
organization because I really love what they are doing for our
community. Also, I have friends with special needs and that drives me
to help even more. Through this organization, I am able to volunteer
around 4 hours a month. At these events, my jobs are usually to help
set up the event and help clean up. I am also assigned a booth every
event that usually is home to some type of game or craft. At the
booth I help the children with the task at hand, and make it as fun
as possible for them.
biggest challenge while volunteering for this organization has been
getting my friends to volunteer with me. My friends always have an
excuse on why they can’t come, but in reality they have nothing
better to do. I want my friends to join me because I want them to see
how amazing these kids are, and how we should not take the things we
have for granted. The thing that brings me the most satisfaction
while doing these events is seeing the smiles on the kids once they
win one of the games or after they have completed their craft. Their
smiles are so big and contagious, you can’t help but smile yourself.
What I have learned from volunteering with this organization is that
you should never take what you have for granted. Even the things we
don’t think about, like proper function from your hands, or the
ability to speak, hear or see.
My career goals
won’t have a direct affect on my volunteering but can most definitely
be linked. I plan to pursue a business degree, and in my free time I
still plan to volunteer for organizations just like Matthew’s
Helping Hands, and get my own kids involved in the future. The change
that I seek to foster in the world is that people with special needs
are not looked upon as different anymore, they are no different from
you and me. If i was to come back after I couple years, I do believe
that my volunteer activities will have made a change in my community.
Every person you meet, you will have some type of impact on their
life. I know that through my work with Matthew’s Helping Hands, I
made a positive impact on many lives. The kids that attend those
events have made a huge impact on mine as well.
