Even though I have just got into volunteering, I know the
significances it brings. Over the summer I volunteered with local
police officers, firefighters, students, and teachers to teach 1st
graders different elements of safety. Though this program was short,
22 hours for one week, I highly enjoyed being around the children and
watching their minds grow. As a volunteer I showed the children
different ways to remember their parent’s phone number and home
address, how to cross the street, and when to call 911. I never
realized how difficult it was to explain to the kids why learning how
to be safe was immensely important to themselves and the community.
However, I was fulfilled to watch the children figure out why being
safe protects many people and watch the children talk to their
families about what they learned in the week. That week helped me
discover why it is important to be knowledgeable of different safety
procedures. Everyone in the community wants to feel safe in their
homes and out in public. There are different authorities to help
with this need, but overall we need every citizen of the community to
look out for each other.
I plan to volunteer more every month because I see the impact it
brings. All of the activities I participate in are in the category
of “forward looking.” “Forward looking” describes your
intentions of wanting a better future for the community. I wanted to
help teach kids safety because I knew the future community would
become stronger and safer. In this world there are many things I
would like to encourage via my volunteering activities. I would love
to teach more children about safety and encourage them to speak about
their new skills. I also want to encourage the idea that no child
should go to bed hungry. There are many organizations in my area to
help with this issue. In twenty years or so I do believe my
volunteering will create an impact. The activities I volunteer for
deal with the younger generation, so when the children grow up they
impact the community immensely.
Volunteering makes me think about what I want to do as a career. I
really enjoy being around children; however, I do not feel like
teaching children is the right path for me. I am aware of the huge
responsibility teachers have because the children are so molable, and
I do not want to give them the wrong material. Even though I enjoy
being around kids and people tell me I get along with them very well,
I believe I should just say with volunteering.
