Luther King Jr. once said “Everybody can be great… because
anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve.
You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only
need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love” I have
made it my mission to serve others in homeless shelters and youth
arts programs. I helped out these communities after my friend invited
me to a women’s shelter in D.C. After seeing the shelter, I realized
that there are so many people who need help and decided that I would
help in the ways I know how; service and art. Volunteering was one of
the best ways to help because even though I may not be an expert in
everything, I know how to serve food, make beds, and wash clothes. I
could also organize well which prompted me to organize a towel and
linen donation for a Men’s Shelter in DC. Also, attending an Arts
School prompted me to perform for the community so it would inspire
them to pursue a career in the Arts or awaken a newfound passion. I
volunteer every other week for about twelve hours a day and even more
when I have spare time based on my schedule. The biggest challenge I
have had was inspiring other people of my age to give back to their
community. However, the satisfaction of knowing you’re making a
difference in someone’s life makes it easier. I have learned that
everyone is going through something they don’t talk about and
patience and kindness are not only key virtues but a way of life.
Life is already so hard on a person that you don’t need more people
to make it worse. My mission is to save and help people, whether it’s
from starvation, depression, or even taking their own life.

I
see my actions as forward-looking because I am progressing into a
bigger movement. There’s a problem in America that needs to be
addressed properly. I am trying to become innovative, reach goals,
and enable plans towards the stability, or at least awareness, of
man. People are the greatest resources and we need to protect each
other. The change I would like to see in the world is unrealistic but
the change I can foster in the world is awareness, first. And from
there, I would like to inspire others to help because it takes more
than one person to make such a monumental change. If I were to come
back in thirty years, I would have at least made a huge difference in
my community. And if my plans stay on the right course, I have a
feeling that, nationally, I would have made a difference through art
and film.
