What Do You Learn in Drivers Ed, and Why Is It Important

Drivers education is mandatory for teens under 18 in most states. It is the first step towards a learner’s permit and a great way to teach you traffic laws in your state.

If you are eligible to apply for a learner’s permit, you are probably wondering what drivers ed covers, and why you can’t just skip it. With this article, you will get a little sneak peek into the world of driving education.

What is Drivers Ed and Where to Find It

Drivers ed is here to teach you traffic laws, safe driving techniques, and driving responsibility. All three are extremely important to become a safe and responsible driver. If you can do that, the roads will become a safer place.

The course is usually 30 hours long. You can expect to cover many important topics, after which you will have to pass a permit test. The permit test shouldn’t scare you, especially if you spend enough time going through permit practice tests.

Basically, drivers education is here to prepare you to become a driver. Sadly, most students consider it a boring classroom course. They think it isn’t important and thus don’t pay attention.

Luckily there is a solution. Drivers ed online is the best way to go through the obligatory 30 hours without having to sit in a boring classroom. Another great fact is that you can go through the course in your time and on your terms.

The online course is carefully put together to make it as interesting and inviting as possible. You shouldn’t be bored learning about traffic laws and your safety. You should be motivated to become a safe and responsible driver.

Why Drivers Ed Is Mandatory

According to the teen driver statistics, traffic accidents are the main cause of death and disability for teens in the United States. The thing is that these crashes are completely preventable if teens are properly educated and focused during driving.

The three main reasons for teen crashes are the lack of scanning, speeding, and distractions. Distractions are the most common. Smartphones, loud music, and other passengers are all distracting if they prevent you from properly focusing on the only important task, driving.

This is why you need to devote time to learn and understand traffic laws and safe-driving techniques. So you don’t end up as a part of the statistics.

It doesn’t matter how confident you are or how good your driving is. As a teen driver, you are lacking experience. And not just experience in driving, experience in avoiding collisions and anticipating danger.

These skills are very hard to teach because they cannot be practiced. Someone can explain to you how to anticipate danger while driving, but you cannot put these techniques into action. Because of that fact, you have to be extra careful and mindful of your surroundings as a teen driver.

A Short Overview of Drivers Ed

Now that you understand why drivers ed is important, you can better appreciate what you are going to learn. You can divide the course into two main topics, traffic and driving laws and safe-driving techniques.

Traffic and Driving Laws

Traffic laws keep you and other people safe. Imagine the power of a moving vehicle in hands of an untrained and uneducated person. The traffic can function properly only when all drivers follow the specific rules we call driving laws.   Here are a few examples you will cover in Drivers ed:

  • Right of Way - probably the most important rule

  • Road Signs

  • The safe distance you have to keep from other vehicles

  • The importance of speed limits

  • Wearing a seat belt

  • Never drink and drive

  • You can only change lanes through hashed or “broken” lines

  • You always stop before pedestrians

Safe-Driving Techniques

Many techniques can help you become a better and safer driver. It is important that you practice them and not just learn and forget. With practice, the techniques will become a habit. It only takes some attention and focus, and safe driving can become second nature to you.

These are some of the safe-driving techniques you will cover in drivers ed:

  • Following the speed limit

  • Minimizing distractions

  • The dangers of texting while driving

  • Being mindful of the traffic in front of you as well as behind

Final Thoughts on Drivers Ed

In the United States, driving is introduced at a younger age and with restricted freedom. If you use this opportunity properly, you can become a responsible driver. This is the main reason behind Drivers Ed. You have to learn the laws and skills to become a safe driver.
