I want to take you back to the summer of 2022, the night of the 4th of July. The weather is perfect, and my friends and I have just left South Carolina for the big fireworks. We had a good budget spending around 250 dollars on everything ranging from Roman candles to fireworks that could be heard from blocks away. Little did we know that wouldn’t be the only price we had to pay. As we were leaving Rock Hill on the way back to Charlotte, we encountered someone on the road who appeared to be swerving and under the influence. So, we decided to stay far from them, everything seemed to be okay for us as we got off the exit to get to my friend's house. Out of surprise, we saw the same car but this time he was beside us in the right lane, and we were in the lane to go straight. That night I decided not to drive so I was in the passenger seat. As the light turned green that same car decided to try to jump ahead of us and turn left and ended up hitting us, something told me to watch that car, but it all happened so fast. Next thing you know, his car was on the top of our right bumper. I would've never expected the night to go in that direction, Thank God nobody was seriously injured. This could have been avoided if the man had educated himself or even second-thought driving before he got in that car. When we had to get out of the car I had to climb to the back seat to open the door behind the driver's seat since mines was underneath the other car. Come to find out it was a young man driving he couldn't have been no older than 17 or 18.
This wakeup call was what I needed to understand that accidents like this can be fatal. This is why the role that driver education plays in the reduction of road incidents, especially among the young and newly licensed, cannot be overstated. There are many effective programs that provide knowledge not just about the operation of the vehicle, but also about the kind of safety-and-sanity-related decisions that are going to keep the driver, their passengers, and the folks in the other vehicles safe. To prevent future accidents, we have to take precautions and take steps like implementing graduated licensing systems. These systems allow new drivers to gain experience by restricting driving at high-risk times or with multiple passengers. This exposure helps new drivers develop confidence and competence, ultimately leading to safer driving practices. Another thing we can do is work on increasing public awareness campaigns about the perils of impaired and distracted driving, which is also a vital step. This initiative can utilize social media campaigns, workshops, and community events, to spread awareness and promote responsible behaviors. For instance, engaging storytelling and factual data can create lasting impressions about the dangers of reckless driving. In the years to come we will see technological advancements in vehicles, such as collision avoidance systems and mobile applications that promote safe driving habits. This can significantly enhance road safety. These technologies alert drivers to potential dangers and aid in making safer driving choices, thereby reducing the incidence of accidents.
A couple of things that help me mitigate risks when driving is removing distractions, that can be my phone, having the GPS set up already before the car starts moving and driving with less people in the car. I have taken drivers ed already and the most memorable advice given to me is that driving is a privilege emphasizing the need for responsible behavior. Ever since I started driving, I have kept this in mind, being sure that I am careful of not just myself but others on the road. It's common to get so used to driving that you forget the laws, so I recommend people to participate in refresher driver education courses to ensure that you are up to date on current traffic laws and safe driving practices. I also encourage drivers to surround themselves in an environment where safe driving is discussed openly, this can significantly influence friends and family to shift perspectives on road safety, encouraging others to adopt similar responsible habits. Therefore, a network of individuals who hold each other accountable can spread awareness of safe driving habits and be vigilant about reckless behaviors, to work together to reduce accidents and fatalities.
In conclusion, driver education should be more normalized to raise public awareness of responsible driving practices. Staying educated serves as a vital component, promoting a safer driving culture. My personal experience highlights the importance of these efforts in preventing future tragedies. As responsible drivers, we must commit to our safety and influence others positively. Shifting your perspective is important because incidents can happen at the most unexpected times.
