Many believe that driver education is just about learning to operate a car, reading signs, and getting a license. Actually, driver education can save lives, because it can help young people to think before they act. Accidents occur daily when a person makes an uninformed decision in just a few seconds. Those moments can be avoided by driver education, which provides learning opportunities to help prepare the driver before he or she enters the wheel. I watched those lessons and for students such as myself, those lessons were more profound than the lessons of driving. They are symbols of maturity, responsibility and awareness that one choice can alter not just your life, but the lives of others for good or ill.

As a child, particularly in middle school, I didn't have direction or focus. I had no idea of being serious about my future, and as with many teenage years, I had taken in the mindset of those around me. So, motivating oneself and caring about long-term goals became easy to lose. On one day, my grandfather sat me down and gave me a talk that shifted my thinking. He explained that life moves quickly, and every decision that you make will take you either forward or backwards. He told me that when there is no one looking, it is all about discipline. This was the conversation that stuck with me because I thought to myself, "how can it be that poor choices can add up to dangerous habits? Driver education is the same. Safe driving starts before hitting the road. It begins with self-control, awareness and understanding of consequences.

When I was in high school, I started to make adjustments in my life. My mother also was an integral part of helping me get back on track. I began to take school seriously, to work harder, and think about the future. I now work at a local restaurant, bike to work and am saving up for my first car and then my first apartment. I have learned about responsibility and patience from working with a minimum wage and having to balance school. It's also taught me the value of safety. As I cycle around, whether along the road or watching traffic go by, I see every day the danger of one careless or reckless decision causing injury to someone instantly. One of the major benefits of a driver training course is that it educates the students that driving is not a game, or something for socializing with friends; it is a duty and a responsibility that requires the individual to be focused on the task at hand, every second of the time.

I also know the need to set a good example for others. I live with my brother and sister and I make sure that they are all okay and I help my mother to keep stress down, too. I have had friends and classmates over the years who were going down a bad path and I wanted to encourage them as my uncle and grandfather encouraged me. I was more of a person who they had something to say to and I saw some of them gradually change their thinking and options. I feel like driver education is the same way. Good habits rub off on people when they are placed in positive guidance and positive living models. Few things can prevent lives from being lost more effectively than teaching young drivers the dangers of distracted driving, speeding, drunk driving and emotional decision making.

While my GPA is a 3.2, these are just some of my achievements to prove my growth. I earned a high grade on the AICE English General Paper exam, performed very well on the PM tests, received top marks on my coursework from the principal for my Geometry and U.S. History exams, and was one of the top students in my art class, which resulted in being offered the chance to teach art. I am also working on my business certificate as I want to own a business and retire my family someday, and study for a Masters degree in criminal psychology. My life track has had its bumps and bruises, but the important thing is that growth is more valuable than any starting point. The message remains the same with driver education. It provides young drivers with the facts and practice needed to become responsible drivers before they make mistakes that become life-long problems.

In sum, driver education is vital because it qualifies drivers to be responsible, aware, and mature, thereby saving lives. Many accidents are not due to lack of skill, but poor judgment, distraction, or lack of foresight. Youth Drivers become aware of risk prevention through proper education. I know that education and guidance can make a difference, as I have learned to take a different direction and make a smarter choice. One talk really changed my life and one lesson on the road can save another.
