Be
Wise, Be Safe

We
have all seen accidents, some fender benders and others that are
absolutely horrific, and we have all wondered, “what happened”?
When I first got my driver’s license I was fresh out of driver’s
education and behind the wheel, I was cautious, drove under the speed
limit and used all of the defensive driving techniques I learned. As
I observed other drivers, I became more lax and picked up some bad
habits. It only took reading about one young distracted driver who
hit a family and as a result the children died, to make me realign my
thinking and get back to my safe driving practices and habits. My
Mother was rear-ended by a distracted driver. As a result she
suffered broken bones and severe back pain. We must put our phones
down. I can always tell when drivers are driving while reading,
texting or talking because they drive like all of the videos of drunk
drivers. It isn’t worth the consequences to get mad, have road
rage, speed to get somewhere swerving in and out of cars. A car
swerved and caused my Dad to be thrown from his motorcycle. He was
injured but lived, many others have not. I am young and I tell me
friends and family that I’d rather get someone slow and safe than
fast and hurt. There’s so many things to distract us while we
drive and it’s so easy to try to multi-task while we drive. It may
sound like hyperbole, but that multi-tasking could literally cause us
our life or our freedom. When we drive - there is no room for other
tasks.

Drivers,
especially young drivers need to realize that we can cause immense
harm with our car, harm that I know we don’t intend to and don’t
want the consequences that result from this recklessness either. Be
wise. Be safe.
