One thing I noticed the moment my classmates got their license, was how excited they were and immediately started driving around with their friends in the car. So basically the moment they were legal to drive, they were also instantly distracted. I was too nervous to do this and my parents definitely wouldn’t have allowed it. Unfortunately, people make silly and stupid mistakes when they are showing off for their friends and are overly excited about something. One rule I have in my car is everyone will wear a seat belt no matter what. I make sure to set that stage before they enter the car. Their life is in my hands and that is not something I take lightly nor should anyone.
A driver might become distracted by their passengers, their phone, music playing, what’s going on outside the vehicle, etc. With better focus and habits, everyone can feel safe and more importantly be safe on the roads. There are many things you can do to make road safety a top priority. One of the biggest causes of accidents is from drivers who are under the influence. Even if you feel well enough to get behind the wheel it is always better to be safe than sorry. You should always find someone else who can transport you safely. Another major distraction is from cell phones. You should never be on any form of technology while driving. Make sure to always keep your device out of your hands and maybe even silence it so you are not tempted to check it.
Another behavior to adapt is constantly being aware of your surroundings. Be careful of stop signs, traffic lights, speed limits, pedestrians, and anything else occurring around you. No matter how insignificant these factors may seem, even a simple improvement can save a life and most definitely prevent fewer accidents. I myself was in an accident this April. Although no one was injured, it was still very frightening especially because most of the people involved were fellow classmates. We were all following each other too close driving home from school, so when the front car slammed on their brakes all the cars behind followed and unfortunately caused a five car pile up. If we had all kept a safe distance the wreck could have been avoided, therefore none of our cars would have been damaged or totaled. Since then, I am way more cautious of the space between other cars and I.
It is so important to be fully focused while driving because every behavior and distraction counts. Just one person driving more cautiously can inspire others to follow. My brother is 3 years younger and is frequently in the passenger seat of my vehicle. It is my responsibility as a citizen and his older sibling to set a good example. If I were to see my parents texting while driving, I would think it’s okay for me to do the same. So I certainly do not want to teach those learning to drive these horrible habits. Leading by example is always the way to go!
If drivers become more mindful on the road, I am certain there will be a decrease in deaths as a result of driving. I have heard so many sad stories of losing loved ones due to reckless driving and it breaks my heart! I can’t imagine losing a friend or family member especially if it was someone else's fault. It doesn’t just affect the people involved in the accident but everyone around them too. It’s so easy to forget all of this and start speeding the moment you turn on the ignition. However, I must say in writing this essay it really has me thinking about my responsibilities everytime I’m behind the wheel. Sometimes we just need a friendly reminder.
