As for me, my biggest challenge is being afraid of being behind the wheel. For example, not too long ago I was on my way home and hydro planned. There were ways that I could have prevented it, but I overreacted because I was afraid and ended up spinning. I know many of my friends who either have their phones out while driving or let their friends pressure them into driving faster or carrying more people than their car should have in it. My parents had me install an app called “Do not disturb while driving”, and that helps me to not focus on my phone. However, in my opinion the worst struggle teenagers face while driving is the lack of experience. Many young people don’t get taught proper driving etiquette, and it causes major problems for all people involved. Something that I have seen more than anything else with teenagers behind the wheel is them being afraid. Many people, not just teenagers, are afraid of driving, and they have good reasons not only is driving difficult, but many people’s lives are in the driver’s hands and that can be quite an intimidating way to look at it, so it discourages many people from choosing to get in the driver’s seat of a car. I have also experienced this; it was my first time driving at night and I went over a hill and the oncoming traffic had their bright lights on so I was completely blinded and had it not been for my dad telling me to look at the white lines on the side of road I more than likely would have been in a car accident. If I were paying attention to something other than the road such as my phone or a passenger, then bad things could have followed. That instance and my hydroplane accident, that I stated earlier in the essay made me understand how important it is to always be focused on the road and abide by the traffic laws as well as common driving courtesy.
There are many things that we as a society can do to help make driving safer and more comfortable for all. Now that being said not everyone will listen, but if some would, driving could get better. To get down to the specifics there are three different groups who could affect the safety of driving. Teenagers, we need to learn more about safe driving and silence our phones. The teenagers could take many different paths to learn about driving such as asking their parents to teach them or going and getting driving lessons which is the better option because they will teach you the proper way to do things while your parents may have their own way of driving which can't be helped so it's always safe to ger multiple people opinions on the matter of safe driving and always make sure to follow the laws of the road. The school system, all teenagers close to driving age should be required to take a class about driving safely. As for the schools, once a student enters high school, they should be required to have a full driver’s license by the time they graduate as well as the school having a mandatory class about driving safety and practicing driving once the student is old enough to drive. If the student has not completed the course and don’t have their license, they should not be permitted to graduate high school. Our communities, which could always pitch in and help the younger people learn better driving skills or offer a reward-based safety program. As a community, people should work together to make driving safer instead of getting mad and honking when someone makes a driving mistake. We should talk and help them understand what they did and that if they keep doing it then it could end up hurting not just them but also other drivers and pedestrians and can set a bad example for other drivers.
