Behind
the Wheel

I
was only seven when I was playing with my dolls in the back seat of
my mom’s car. My innocent self couldn’t imagine anything
happening, and suddenly I’m flung forward, my head hitting the back
of the driver’s seat. I don’t remember much, but I do remember
hearing cries from my mother saying, “Laura! Laura, are you okay?”.
The worried look on my mom’s face told me something was wrong, and
thankfully everyone was okay. I didn’t know it then, but now as a
young adult I realized that crash was due to another driver’s
incompetence.

As a sophomore in high school I admitted myself into a Drivers Ed
class, something many should take. Education when it comes to driving
Is essential to everyone, even if you have been driving for years.
People should know the risks when you’re sitting behind a wheel.
This class has taught thousands of students these dangers; the fact
that you’re not only protecting yourself, but preventing others
from getting hurt because of your actions. Many cases have I seen an
accident caused by a drunk driver, one even being a friend. This was
a lesson he had to learn the hard way on his way to the hospital,
when it shouldn’t have to have gotten to that. Education could’ve
prevented that. My education is glued to my head, the risks and the
effects my actions, swirling in my mind each time I think of making a
decision. That is what should be going through everyone’s head.

Many
people can change such causes with just a couple of simple steps.
Don’t text and drive. Texts can always wait; the consequences are
much greater if you crash, than if you don’t answer your friend
rill you reach the destination. A simple solution to a case of
emergency would be to pull over somewhere safe and answer.
Distractions such as someone in your passenger seat can’t be going
on while you’re driving, let them know, and stay focused! Alcohol
and drugs are also a major issue. Which can be solved by calling a
taxi to pick you up or even your parents; they’ll be happy you’re
safe at the end of the day. Just these simple steps can make such a
difference, you just have to educate yourself and others!
