Walking
into the bar, it was 12 P.M.
Crowded
bar stools, men playing pool, the band playing and women chattering.
I sat down on an empty stool and started to drink my life away.
Twelve shots in everything became a blur. The band became faint, the
women became shadows, and the stools became empty. I decided I’ve
had enough. No cab, no friend to call, just me. It was 2:00 A.M.
I
climbed into my car and headed home. It felt like a dream. Head
spinning, eyes closing, hands shaking, everything became a daze. I
hear my radio faintly, sounds like a buzzing in my ear. I feel my
hands slowly slipping but I jerk back to reality. I feel the rumble
strips and hear the loud vibrations and jerk back to the median. I
faintly hear a loud horn, and see a bright light coming straight
towards me. Then the world went black.
An average 34,000 people die
each year as a result of driving. 10, 220 of those deaths are from
drunk driving. Drunk driving is something that impacts people no
matter their age. Driving is a privilege, something you should strive
to learn more about, something you should never take for granted.
Driving puts not only you’re life at stake but millions of others.
The number one cause of car related accidents in the U.S. is
distracted driving. This includes cell phones, passengers, music, and
alcohol. The United States teaches these factors in Drivers ed
classes all around the globe. Their goal is to reduce as many deaths
as possible as a result of driving. The education kids are receiving
is important due to it saving their life. Drivers ed will tell
students and young adults that driving under the influence is not
“normal”. It will teach them to first perceive the hazard, and
then take appropriate action to avoid it. Their response can make a
difference between safely avoiding a road hazard or a serious
accident. There are many steps we can take to avoid driver
irresponsibility. You have to always make sure you are alert for
threats. When you are driving you should drive aware and alert.
Always be on the lookout for potential problems. Never let your
passenger and/or radio get too loud or too distracting. Driving with
distractions can cause accidents while it is easily avoidable. Even
though I have never had to experience a death related to driving it
still is a major issue that worries my family and me. It is a threat
every time you get in a car. I have witnessed friends not take safe
precautions while driving because they want to “be cool” or “fit
in”. This is a global issue and I feel furthering their education
could make an impact. I plan to become a safer driver by furthering
my education on driving and be more alert while behind the wheel.
You’re life if more valuable than that buzz from a text message.
