A
couple years ago I learned that a girl from my class had died over
the weekend in a car accident. She’d been hit by another car while
trying to pull out onto the highway, and died in the hospital two
days later. I was in disbelief that the girl who had been sitting at
my table at Spanish was now gone. While I myself have never been in a
car accident, I can only imagine how terrifying of an experience it
would be, for not just myself but others around me. With motor
vehicle related accidents being one of the leading causes of death in
teens, drivers ed becomes that much more important. In drivers
ed it can teach and help better prepare students for things to come,
and how to prevent such accidents. Taking precautions like locking
your doors as soon as you get in can help to prevent car jacking, and
checking your tire pressure frequently. Not only that, but teaching
defensive driving classes is incredibly important in the process of
creating safe drivers. Being able to defend yourself and others from
a reckless driver can be crucial to preventing accidents. As well as
that, one of the more obvious steps towards being a safer driver
includes following the “easy” rules, like following the speed
limits, and being cautious overall as you drive. Common sense is one
of the best strengths one can have as a driver. For example, not
slowing down enough at a red light when it’s raining, not signaling
when making a turn, or not turning on your headlights on a dark road
can all be potentially life threatening. With steps like these, the
roads can be a much safer place and the number of deaths could
decrease exponentially.
