Look outside there’s a car. Everywhere you look cars fill the roads. Every year, countless lives are lost in motor vehicle accidents, making road safety a major concern. With so many people driving every day, the risk of accidents is always present. As a teenager getting their license for the first time, driving can be exciting but nerve-wracking at the same time. It’s a new experience, and a huge responsibility comes with it. A few years after getting my license I was involved in a car accident- a day I remember well. It had snowed that morning, but most of it was cleared from the roads, so I assumed driving conditions were safe. On my way to my dentist appointment, I went to turn on the road unaware there was black ice still on the road. As soon as I turned my car slid and collided with the other vehicle waiting at the light. I was terrified and in complete shock, unsure of what to do next. My hands were shaking as I tried to process what had just happened. The impact wasn’t severe since I wasn’t going fast, but it could have been much worse. I immediately called my mom; she helped calm me down. I remember crying, fearing my parents would be angry, but instead, they were grateful I was okay. This experience taught me an important lesson about being cautious while driving, especially in winter. Now, I am much more aware of road hazards and take extra precautions, ensuring that I drive safely no matter the weather.
While driver education is important in road safety, I believe that a few additional measures can be taken to further reduce traffic-related fatalities. Making stricter traffic laws, improving road infrastructure, and adding technology can all play an important role in minimizing accidents. By enforcing laws against speeding, using a seatbelt, drunk driving, and distracted driving we can bring down the number of wrecks. We could enforce more sobriety checks, and speed cameras, and increase the amount of police presence. When having well-maintained roads, properly and marked signs, efficient traffic control systems, speed bumps, more roundabouts can all increase safety for everyone, especially in high-risk areas. Modern vehicles have so much technology with safety features such as automatic braking, lane departure, and adaptive cruise control. Encouraging others who don’t have this technology to mandate these could help prevent many accidents. We could also have a new way to get your license, which can require them to have more experience and make sure it stays effective, I believe that if a driver is getting bad to the point they have gotten into so many wrecks or has been speeding, they have to take the drivers test again to make sure they are following the rules or almost like the test we had to take for our permit so they understand the rules and regulations.
Becoming a safer driver requires awareness and committing to responsible behavior. One step that can be taken is to avoid distractions, this is one of the main causes of accidents. It's very easy to be distracted by your phone, one second you can look up and the car in front of you could be stopped and it might be too late. But it's not too late to put your phone out of reach and stay focused on the road and everything around you. Also, keep an eye out for others around you. Don’t ever trust other drivers by being aware of how they are driving Another step is to follow the speed limits and traffic laws, following these is very simple but very effective. Another step is being patient, I know following a slow driver or having someone following you close can be so frustrating but being calm will make it safer for everyone. Avoiding driving under the influence is also a major step this can impair your judgment and reaction time a lot. It's important to be safe yourself and keep others safe.
Driving education is important for road safety, helping reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads. Especially we use roads for everything like jobs, getting food, going to the hospital, etc. However, it must be complemented by stricter laws, better infrastructure, and technological advancements. On a personal level, committing to responsible driving practices and encouraging others to do the same can contribute to a safer driving environment. By taking these steps, we can all play a major role in reducing traffic-related deaths and making roads safer for new and experienced drivers.
