Driver
education is a crucial part of reducing the number of deaths as a
result of driving. In drivers ed, you learn how to drive
defensively, always looking at what other people on the road are
doing. Learning how to drive defensively, in my experience, has been
quite useful and has protected me from getting into accidents on the
road. I think that as people age, they should have to take driver’s
education again, because the rules of the road change frequently and
people need to stay updated on best practices when it comes to
driving.

Along
with continuous education, I think that doing other activities while
driving should all be made completely illegal. There is no reason
that we can’t wait to eat our cheeseburger, or text our friend
back. I am positive that our friends would rather us be alive and
respond to their text later than get a phone call stating that we
have died because of the said text message. I think that we should
have to pay full attention to what is going on in the road, to
protect others around us.
In
my 22 years on earth, I have been in numerous car accidents. I have
also had family members be in car accidents as well. Just this past
spring, my brother was involved in a three-car accident. An elderly
man was driving behind him and did not see him stopping and hit him
from behind, moving my brother into oncoming traffic, as a car with a
young mom and her two kids hit the front of my brother’s car. All
because this man could hardly see, my brother’s life was
threatened, along with the young mother and her babies. I am
thankful, though, that everyone made it out of the accident alive
with bruises and scrapes. I think that having people take driver’s
education continuously throughout life, would be the safest option to
prevent car crashes like my brother’s. Driving instructors can
assess whether or not a person is still safely able to drive, and
this could save many lives in the process.

As
a driver, I can make sure I am paying full attention to the road when
I am driving. I always wear my seat belt and go the speed limit while
I am driving. I think by setting an example, I can make an impact on
other drivers as well. I know we all have place to be but is
someone’s life really worth going 20 miles per hour over the speed
limit?
