Deaths due to driving can be caused by many different factors including drunk and distracted driving. In high school, they always lecture on drunk and distracted driving during driver’s education. These lectures are specifically designed to scare many students straight or just scare them in general. They show over exaggerated scenes of what could happen if you or someone you know drinks and drives or drives while distracted. Without the proper education drivers would be more likely to get into wrecks and more likely to drive drunk and/or distracted especially when they first started driving.
I believe that bringing more awareness to the issues of driving would help reduce the numbers of deaths. During my junior year of high school, I participated in a drunk driving simulation that will forever be engraved in my mind. The simulation was the scariest thing I have ever witnessed from watching one of my fellow classmates “flatline” at the hospital to hearing my friends blood curdling screams ring through the air to seeing one of my classmates in a body bag. The whole experience was so surreal and helped to make sure that none of us would drink and drive. If there were more programs like this across the United States then I believe that there would be way less drunk driving incidents and deaths.
Back when I had first started driving I got into a car accident. I was pulling out onto a main road and ended up getting rear ended by the car behind me. It was a pretty scary situation for me because I have major anxiety. Luckily my car was okay and there was really no damage done to either vehicle. I think the scariest part of the whole situation was telling my father about what happened.
I believe that to be a better driver you need to be aware of your surroundings; so you need to not be distracted. When I am in my car I usually try to keep my phone on, do not disturb or at least out of sight/reach so that it will not distract me. I also try to keep my music at a controlled volume and if there are passengers in my car that they are keeping their noise at a minimum. Another thing that you can do is make sure your friends are being safe; so when your friends are drinking make sure there is either a designated driver or they get a ride home.
