It is no gainsay that one of the most pressing issues of safety on the roads is Distracted driving. This trend is very common among younger drivers, including students. This has led to a heightened risk of road accidents, ultimately reducing the life expectancy of youths in the United States. Of a huge number of factors causing this, technology and social media particularly exacerbate the problem. Other factors, such as drug and alcohol misuse, lack of concentration, and a host of many others, contribute to this ravaging menace. In my candid opinion, understanding these common distracted driving habits and then making frantic efforts towards implementing concrete measures to combat them is key to enhancing road safety and safeguarding lives.
The unrestrained use of smartphones by student drivers is one of the most prevalent distractions. A large percentage of students who drive are not disciplined enough to curtail the excesses of texting, surfing the net, uploading videos, and using apps while driving. Texting while driving also poses a very grave hazard, as it involves manual, visual, and cognitive distractions. According to very credible sources, texting while driving increases the risk of crashing by 23 times.
Another contributing factor is social media engagement. Students are often so engaged with social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok even while driving. All in a bid to create and upload content or to even catch up with the latest gist on trending blogs; their attention gets divided while on the road. This engagement can be highly distracting and ultimately detrimental, as it also involves both visual and cognitive distractions. The constant influx of notifications and messages, plus the desire to stay connected, can pose innumerable threats and even accidents.
Furthermore, students frequently drive in the company of friends, leading to various forms of distractions from conversations, laughter, and even rowdy behavior. These forms of distraction can shift the driver's gaze from the road and other driving conditions, which could be detrimental to their safety as well as that of other road users.
One neglected factor for driving distraction is listening to music at high volume while driving. Listening to good music while driving can be very soothing. However, playing it at high volumes can be very distracting. One of the senses used while driving is hearing. It is important to know that the high volume of music blaring from the speaker of cars can impede the driver’s ability to perceive important auditory cues from the road and other road users such as emergency vehicle sirens or horn signals from other drivers.
Distracted driving can be disastrous if adequate measures are not taken to curb its menacing effect. Schools and universities should educate, sensitize, and help implement comprehensive educational campaigns focused on the dangers of distracted driving. Workshops that teach students about the causes and impacts of distractions while driving should be held periodically. Interactive sessions with certain road safety officers should be organized by these aforementioned academic institutions to help students understand the real-life consequences of their actions.
The government has a crucial role to play in helping to formulate and enhance strict policies and laws that will curtail the driving behaviors of certain students. Road safety Institutions should enforce strict policies regarding the use of electronic devices in vehicles. If need be, implementing a no-phone policy for student drivers and also integrating it into the school code of conduct can help to reinforce the message. Additionally, the government should collaborate with local law enforcement to monitor and penalize distracted driving so as to act as a deterrent to defaulters and negligent drivers. I also believe that if the processes for acquiring a US driving license are made more stringent, drivers, particularly students, would apply more caution on the road.
Technology can also be harnessed by using certain applications and innovations that can help reduce distractions to the barest minimum. Apps that block incoming texts and calls on our smartphones while driving can be encouraged. More so, vehicle manufacturers and app developers should encourage innovative ideas and incorporate smart features that support safe driving practices, such as hands-free controls and advanced driver-assistance systems. Online driving courses and simulators should not be underrated. Game developers should create games in the form of courses that can help prepare young drivers for real-world driving conditions. These simulators can be very interesting; nevertheless, they should be able to model the impact of distractions and provide practical experience in managing various driving situations safely.
The influence of parental guidance and peer influence can never be overemphasized, as they help to redress bad driving habits. Parents should start by setting good examples while driving because young people tend to learn a lot from what they see. Parents should take a step further by helping to promulgate safe driving habits through healthy discussions with their children on the causes and dangers of distracted driving. Peer influence can also come in handy. Students should be encouraged to hold each other accountable and advocate for responsible driving among their peers. They should be encouraged given a platform to form groups and societies that are aimed at promoting the culture of safe driving within and around the United States.
One of the major causes of road accidents is distracted driving, especially among student drivers. Many lives have been wasted due to its resultant effect. Through educational efforts and joint action of the Government, Universities, Parents, and young student drivers, we can all develop safer and healthier driving practices. By adopting and enforcing these strategies, I am optimistic that the risks associated with distracted driving will be mitigated.
