Distracted Driving And The Needless Deaths That Follow
Distracted Driving And The Needless Deaths That Follow
Driving related deaths are the #1 cause of death not only in the U.S but the world outside of health-related diseases. Most all driving related deaths are caused by distracted driving, whether that be distraction from a phone, drugs or just simply not paying attention to the road. Distraction is easy to prevent and I believe that driving education should focus heavily on exploring the many dangers of distracted driving.
This is why driver’s education is important. Driving schools should not only teach students how to drive but also show what distracted driving looks like, what it can cause and how to avoid it. Many people get their license and don’t truly understand the dangers of distracted driving. An example of a program like this would be to have students learn techniques to prevent distracted driving and show the students how devastating the consequence could be if they didn’t take them seriously. Then in the students drive time, the student would have to do those preventive techniques to get signed off on their time by the instructor. With more focus on distracted driving dangers I believe that many deaths could be avoided.
Every driver that gets their license has a responsibility of driving safe to protect the drivers and pedestrians around them. I don’t think many people follow this common courtesy. Many people believe that they don’t need to share the road and that others around them should look out for them. This ideology can lead to many pointless deaths not only to the driver but everyone around them. If people would take driving more seriously then we could see many driving related deaths decreased.
I have personally experienced some friends who drive without a seat belt or feel comfortable driving over the speed limit. Pushing your safety doing these things increases your chance of being killed or killing someone else. Even if you are late or momentarily uncomfortable, its better then ending your life or being part of a murder trial for someone else’s. Many people are killed and or kill someone else while doing make-up, combing their hair, checking their phone, setting the radio or just talking to someone else in the car or on the phone.
One steps I would take would be to power off my phone or store it somewhere out of my way. Also, I would not drive if I was under the influence of drugs. Most importantly, my one and only priority would be to drive safe and focus on the drivers around me.
As a driver I take distracted driving and careless driving seriously because I know it can lead to unspeakable outcomes. I also know that I am in the age range of driving most dangerously statistically. I hope that more people will take these things seriously and try to avoid these very dangerous driving practices. Driving schools should focus more on this topic then they do Today in the hopes that one more life can be saved and a family saved from the unbridiling grief that comes with a carless acident such as distracted driving. If a friend was driving unsafe, I would stand up to them not only for his or my sake but for our family’s sake. As our society becomes more and more advanced to prevent suffering and wide spread diseases Today, we should stop such deadly and preventable distractions.
