Distracted to Death

Driving down the highway, there is nothing scarier than seeing a
flipped car; its smoking underside emitting grey vapors visually into
the air. I worry for my safety as a driver and a passenger when I
witness the driver next to me texting on the interstate. It is so
utterly vital that drivers are educated about their power at the
wheel; their real capability to take another’s life because of the
selfish decision to travel while distracted. Being aware, not only of
one’s surroundings, but of the abilities one has when operating a
motored vehicle will limit the number of crashes and, moreover, the
number of deaths due to collisions annually.

Being completely cognizant while on the road is the best way for a
driver to avoid getting into an accident; however, the passenger can
also help to curb the number of lives lost during a crash. Accurately
putting on a seat belt, changing the radio for the driver, and
working with any children or other passengers in the backseat are all
ways to allow the driver to focus fully on the road ahead of them.
Passengers can also stay off their own phones, both to keep the
driver from wanting theirs and to help watch for other cars that may
be driving recklessly. Additionally, the passenger should never allow
the driver to operate a vehicle while intoxicated; it’s just never
a smart decision.

Thankfully, I have never been in an accident myself, but I have seen
people, even those I know, driving irresponsibly. If I am in the
vehicle, I will voice my concern, whether it be the speed of the car
or a technology-related distraction.

Driving is difficult, especially for other teenagers like me who are
new behind the wheel, but there are easy steps to avoid a collision.
Putting a device to do not disturb while driving helps me to focus on
the road. I think extending this service to other apps like Snapchat
or Instagram would help teens be less tempted towards using their
phones while driving. Whether one is the passenger or talking on the
phone with someone driving, avoiding heating topics of conversation
also allows the driver to concentrate on the task at hand. Driving
respectfully and without road rage is a great way to keep a clearer
head and make better decisions when behind the wheel.

Driving safely will save tens of thousands of lives every year, so
there is really no option. Choosing distracted driving could mean
choosing to end another’s life.
