were created to help people be more efficient in their travel
ventures. An unforeseeable consequence of widespread car usage is a
hefty amount of preventable deaths due to unsafe driving practices.
Irresponsible
driving is a common theme in today’s society that should be taken
more seriously. In our culture, driving seems to be something done to
show off. Many drivers, mainly teens, purposely swerve their cars or
drive way above the speed limit in order to seem flashy. It is common
to fool around because drivers feel like nothing bad will happen to
them. Instructors teach you how to break, park, and turn on your
signal. They don’t go over the consequences of bad habits. Sure,
they tell you that being reckless can harm others, but they do not go
deeper. They don’t tell you how awful you will feel if you kill a
family while you are behind the wheel.. They do not tell you what
will happen to your insurance rates after big collisions. They do not
tell you the guilt you will carry as your parents remind you of your
mistakes, lethal or otherwise, everyday. If drivers ed were to
create a deeper, more real message of what would happen if you don't
drive with caution, it would be more effective. It is common
knowledge that you can seriously injure others by getting in a car
accident. However, saying it so much has made it lose its meaning.
This is why drivers need to know the tangible consequences of
insufficient driving procedures.
Drivers ed
would be more successful if the instruction spent a larger portion of
time going over common mistakes. There are tidbits that drivers learn
as they mature, but these tips should be taught instead of learned
along the way. Some drivers ed courses focus more on helping drivers
pass the permit and driving test instead of helping drivers gain
knowledge that they will frequently use out on the real road.
My grandma was
in a car accident that led her to retire her car keys. A driver
behind her became impatient and hastily swerved into her while trying
to pass her. She was afraid to get back out there because she wanted
to die of old age; not due to an accident because of someone’s
mistake. It is not fair that reckless drivers ruin other people’s
experiences and lives all because they are misinformed or
irresponsible. I am happy to drive my grandma wherever she needs to
go, but I wish she had not gone through a life threatening scenario
at all.
Whenever I get
the chance, I tell drivers to drive as if their destination has a
loved one because their loved ones would want them to arrive in one
piece. Please everyone, make sure to follow the rules of the road
because no recklessness is worth the loss of someone's life or piece
of mind.
