Tucson, Arizona

It was a late Friday night when I picked up a young University of Arizona student who had been at a party. As they got into my car, they sighed with relief and said, “I almost drove home tonight. You probably just saved my life.” That moment struck me deeply. I realized my job as a rideshare driver is more than just taking people from one place to another—it’s about protecting lives, preventing tragedies, and ensuring my passengers make it home safely. This responsibility has shaped not only how I approach driving but also how I envision my future: as someone who can make roads safer through education, action, and innovation.
Driving through Tucson, I’ve experienced the profound impact of providing a safe alternative for people. Whether I’m driving students home after long nights of studying or helping elderly passengers get to their appointments, I see how one small action—choosing to call for a ride—can prevent life-altering mistakes like driving under the influence. Each trip I take feels like a small step toward a safer community, but it’s also taught me how much more needs to be done. These experiences have inspired me to pursue a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, where I hope to develop technologies that make roads safer for everyone, reducing preventable tragedies and saving lives.
Driver education is one of the most critical tools we have to combat road-related fatalities. It’s not just about teaching the mechanics of driving; it’s about instilling a sense of responsibility. Every year, thousands of lives are lost in car accidents, many of which could have been avoided through better education, awareness, and access to safer transportation options. For me, this truth hits home every time I see someone make a better choice by calling for a ride. That student who almost drove intoxicated could have become a devastating statistic, but education, awareness, and access to safe transportation saved their life. It’s moments like that which remind me how important my work as a rideshare driver truly is.
To truly reduce driving-related deaths, we must combine education with technology. While driver education must teach more than technical skills—such as defensive driving, avoiding distractions, and understanding the consequences of reckless behavior—it’s only one piece of the puzzle. Advanced technology can fill the gaps. Systems like automatic braking, collision detection, and AI-driven hazard warnings have already transformed road safety, but there’s so much more potential. My dream is to contribute to this evolution through innovation. I want to design tools like smart road sensors that detect impaired driving behaviors or create vehicle systems that predict and prevent collisions before they occur. These innovations could make tragedies like one I heard from a passenger entirely preventable.
One story, in particular, stays with me—a stark reminder of how fragile life is. I picked up a passenger who had been driving with friends to Mount Lemmon, excited for a day of hiking, when a drunk driver crashed into their car. He survived, but half of his body was paralyzed for life. As he sat in my backseat and shared his story, his voice carried the weight of loss. “One bad decision took my freedom and my dreams,” he said. “If only someone had stopped that driver.” His words cut deep. That crash, entirely preventable, robbed him of the life he once knew. Hearing his story strengthened my commitment to road safety—not just as a rideshare driver helping prevent DUIs, but as someone determined to create meaningful change. Every ride I provide and every step I take toward my degree brings me closer to a future where no one has to endure what he has. His story motivates me every day, pushing me to dream of solutions that can protect others from similar pain.
As a rideshare driver, I’ve learned that becoming a safer driver is about more than just following the rules; it’s about leading by example. I maintain my car carefully, avoid distractions, and remain patient in traffic, even during the busiest hours. But my role extends beyond my own driving habits. I encourage my passengers to think about the consequences of their choices—reminding them to value their lives and the lives of others on the road. When I drive students home, I often hear their gratitude for the simple act of ensuring they didn’t risk driving under the influence. For me, those conversations matter because they reinforce the importance of safety and responsibility.
Still, I know my impact can go beyond the individual rides I provide. By pursuing a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, I aim to address road safety on a systemic level. Imagine a world where technology makes it nearly impossible for a drunk driver to get behind the wheel or where smart vehicles can prevent accidents in real-time. These advancements are within reach, and I want to be part of the effort to make them a reality. It’s about creating systems that protect not only drivers and passengers but everyone who shares the road.
Driving has shown me how deeply interconnected we are. One decision—whether to call for a ride, slow down, or pay closer attention—can save lives. It has also taught me the importance of vigilance and compassion. Every time I pick up an elderly passenger heading to a medical appointment or drive a student home after a long day, I’m reminded of how much people rely on safe transportation. These moments inspire me to think bigger. I don’t just want to help my passengers—I want to create technologies that make driving safer for everyone, everywhere.
Expanding on this dream, I envision working on innovations that integrate seamlessly into our daily lives. For example, I imagine AI systems capable of detecting signs of driver fatigue, alerting them before a mistake happens, or even autonomous systems that assist in emergencies. These tools could transform how we approach road safety, reducing accidents and giving people greater peace of mind. My experiences as a rideshare driver have given me unique insight into the challenges drivers face and the solutions that could make the most impact. I want to use those insights to design technology that not only saves lives but also creates a more responsible and connected driving culture.
With the support of the “In the Driver’s Seat” scholarship, I can take the next step toward achieving this vision. My work as a rideshare driver has taught me that even small actions can have a profound impact. But my ultimate goal is to think bigger, to design systems and tools that prevent tragedies before they happen. I am not just driving people home—I am driving toward a world where technology and responsibility go hand in hand, and where every journey is a safe one.
Because when lives are at stake, every ride matters. Every decision matters. And every one of us has the power to save a life.
