Driver Education Initiative Award
The importance of driver education in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving is critical and essential especially for teenage drivers. Teenagers need to know how to drive before getting their license. Driver's Education does just that and more. Driver's education outlines how to drive properly, how to pay attention to your surroundings, the meanings of road signs, what the consequences are of your actions on the roadway, etc. One step that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving is to limit your distractions inside the car. What I mean by this is to not have loud music playing and/or have lots of people in the car while you are driving. When someone has loud music playing, it is very easy to not pay attention to your speed and what is going on around you. In fact, I was talking with a Allen County Sheriff and he said he pulls over kids all of the time for speeding in the summertime because they are listening to tunes too loud and they get distracted. You should also not have too many people in the car while you are driving. Having too many people in the car makes it hard to concentrate on what is going on around you because you are listening to what they are talking about or what they are doing. I have had an experience of seeing a car accident happen. My family and I were on our way back from having dinner in Bellefontaine, Ohio. We were on 117 in Huntsville, Ohio. We were behind 3 motorcyclists. My family and I were having a discussion about how motorcyclists never use hand signals anymore because the motorcyclists in front of us were actually using signals. Not even a minute later, a driver in the oncoming lane went left of center and hit one of three motorcyclists. The motorcyclist was dead on impact. I could not think straight for weeks and I kept dreaming about the accident. That moment forever changed my life. At the time, I did have my temporary license but not my license because I was not of age to get it. I only had a couple of months till I went to driver's education. That moment taught me to never let my eyes off of the road for a second and to always be alert and aware of my surroundings. The steps that I can take to be better and a safer driver as well as help others to do the same is to really recommend paying attention in drivers education and to always keep your eyes on the road. You never know when your life can change forever due to one wrong decision.
