Drivers ed Initiative 2020: In the Driver’s Seat Drivers ed Initiative 2020: In the Driver’s Seat It is not only important for every driver to take drivers ed, but it is also a requirement for every individual to take a driver’s test before they can operate a vehicle. The Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) requires that all who wish to obtain a license be able to after they have a vision test, knowledge test, and a road test. These three things I believe to be the most important as they allow the DMV to assess your ability to see, to assess your knowledge and understanding of road rules, assess your ability to execute your driving ability while on the road. The knowledge and understanding of how important drivers ed is will lead you to take the necessary steps to help reduce the number of deaths by automobile. Some major causes for accidents that I have witnessed others do are being distracted in some way, not following road signs and signals, and driving under the influence. One main issue I notice is that even while in the passenger seat and alerting others of their wrong doings while in the car that everyone seems to think and say, “I know how to drive”. I have been guilty of saying this even when I am in the wrong. I was in a bad accident two years ago where someone hit me from behind while texting and the guy hit me so hard that my car went up under the truck in front of me, everyone thought I was dead. I couldn’t drive for a while after that accident and would shake when I had to get back behind the wheel. Up until then I had been a good even excellent driver up until this last year when I felt that I knew everything, and bad things could not happen to me on the road because I was the one in control. But this last year has taught me a major lesson- that anyone can lose control at any given moment and that I did. I made a bad decision and got behind the wheel after having a few drinks and hit a parked car. I almost totaled my brand-new car. In February of this year I got my licensed suspended for 6 months, the only thing I keep thinking about is that how happy I am that I didn’t kill anyone including myself. Sometimes tragedy will make you take the necessary steps to be a better and safer driver. Right now, I must depend on others to get me around and while I am happy that I have those to help me I can’t wait to get back on the road again. I will make sure I never drive under the influence again or anyone that is in my company, I will not text and drive, and I will make sure I take extra precaution while observing road signs and taking caution with other drivers.
