What is the importance of driver education in reducing the number deaths as a result of driving? What steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving? Have you ever had an experience of being in car accident or have seen your friends or family members driving irresponsibly? What steps can you take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road?
Driving is a great responsibility that one must earn. Being well versed in the rules of the road, the laws, and safety of driving is more important than ever. I found the number one cause of death each year is due to vehicle related deaths.
Driver education has a whole new meaning for me as I am now a mother of a pre teen who will have her license next year. I am overwhelmed with worry and fear due to the statistics. However, because of this I’ve been extra diligent teaching her the laws and rules of the road. Every time we are in a vehicle we cover one rule, law, safety or other. I need her to understand that driving is a great responsibility. You are not only responsible for your own life put the lives of others when you drive.
Unfortunately, in today’s day and age driving with a phone in hand is the norm. Statistically driving while texting leads to a higher death toll than driving while under the influence of alcohol. I have see the consequences of this first had. I knew that I had to lead by example so every time we get in a vehicle, I secure my phone in my purse and it stays there while the keys are in the ignition. I know my example will be the most impactful example of how to drive. Thus, the responsibility of preparing my daughter for the road is extremely important to me.
Great responsibility comes with the privilege of driving. Everyone one who acquires a license should be fully aware and educated on the safety of this privilege. I personally think the age limit should be pushed back to 18-20 years of age. I’m my experience most teens who are 15-21 are ill prepared for such a responsibility. Another key component to a safer road for all of us is the example we lead with for the next generation of drivers. As a society we are coming a long way in making our roads safer, but to prepare the next generation should be just as important to us as the study of driving is to the driver. I know I take my role in making our roads safer very seriously and I truly believe if everyone did their part we can change these horrible death statistics.
