I never knew much about driving and its safety until I got into middle school and high school. I wondered why my mom got upset when someone wouldn’t use their blinker, and when my parents would constantly tell my older siblings to be careful driving on a rainy day. As parents, they know how the world is and what dangers might come along especially when you get your license. The importance of driving education can go beyond driving without using your blinker here and there, it makes it easier for everyone to get home safely.
During my senior year of high school, I got into a car accident with my mom and boyfriend in the car. I remembered getting into a fender bender once before and never thought I would get into a real car accident in my life. The car accident that happened this year was caused because of a man that didn’t have knowledge of American drivers education and believed he could take a certain turn, however, taking that turn was a horrible mistake. Although no one was seriously hurt, my mom and I had the bad after effects the next day. My mom just had surgery on her broken ankle not too long before the car accident and was still healing with the metal that was placed into her foot. The man that hit our car, hit the driver’s side which then affected my mom and her foot.
My mom and I aren’t the only people I know who’ve been in a car accident. I know more than five other people who have been in at least one car accident, which saddens me. Some time ago, my brother was in a car accident driving home from work. I remembered my parents telling him to drive carefully because it was raining a lot that week, it was also getting dark. I could see the face my brother was making, believing that he knows what he’s doing and he doesn’t have to listen to our parents. My brother made a mistake not listening to our parents that night. Although he wasn’t seriously injured, he lost his car that he just got. I could see how upset my brother was when he came home. Another person I know who has been in a car accident is one of my sister’s friends. My sister’s friend made a horrible mistake on driving while drunk. She believed that she was okay driving on her own and didn’t listen to her family when they said they would take her home. My sister’s friend ignored her family and tried to drive home. This accident ended in the death of the other driver who was only the age of twenty-two. My sister feels awful about what happened to her friend and especially the other driver.
I believe that there are ways to reduce car accidents and deaths, even if they are simple. I believe that police should arrest people who are driving without a license and make sure that they are able to actually drive. In the car accident I stated before, the man did not have a license and didn’t understand what he did was wrong. The police were involved, however, they did not arrest or question the man which really upsets me. I believe that the man would sooner or later drive again without a license. Because he wasn’t arrested, there’s a chance that he would make the same mistake again and could cause a worse accident than before. I believe the law should be taken seriously to everyone because you never know when a person could make the same mistake again. I also believe that drivers ed should be taught at all schools to better educate younger minds. This subject should be taken seriously for younger people because I do believe they are the ones that make the most mistakes.
Although I don’t have my driver’s license yet, I do spend time studying the rules/laws ever so often. When I have a chance to take my tests, I want to be sure that I deserve my license. I always tend to remind myself that sometimes we as people have a right to have things, however, that doesn’t mean that they could be taken away when they are being abused in such a way. Whenever I do practice driving, I tend to practice on the things that I have trouble with. If I forget to use my blinker or even look over my shoulder, I practice to make sure I do those things regularly. Even the smallest things are important when it comes to driving.
