DRIVERS ED

It is through driver education that responsible and competent drivers are produced. Such programs usually include information on traffic laws, defensive driving skills, hazard awareness, and the effects of alcohol or drugs on performance. These skills taught in driver education reduce errors and risky behaviors that result in crashes. Studies have shown that the rate of road fatalities is lower in most countries that have tough driver education requirements. In the same line of thought, Sweden has very strict driver education and testing, whereby it records one of the least road fatalities in the world with approximately 204 deaths annually. This correlation reflects the vital significance of structured driver education programs for road safety. On the other hand, areas that have loose training on drivers tend to experience high cases of road accidents, such as Georgia, whereby around 2,000 people are killed due to road accidents every year. This is compared to one single state out of 50 to Sweden, its own country. These statistics show the importance of driving education programs and its courses being rigorous.
Besides driver education, there are other measures that can help lower the level of fatalities that occur in driving. Among them is the improvement of infrastructure, a mandatory retesting with some frequency. Proper upgrading of road infrastructure, for instance, better lighting, pedestrian safe areas, and other advanced traffic management systems, can remarkably minimize accidents. I live in Houston, Texas and the roads are poorly created and maintained, thus leading to many accidents. A well-upgraded road infrastructure will considerably reduce the rate of crashes through proper signage and a clear design of junctions, among other features.
The introduction of compulsory periodic retesting of drivers every five years can go a long way in improving road safety, as it will keep drivers reminded of the contemporary rules of the road and safe driving. As experience carries on, drivers begin to acquire bad habits or forget important safety rules, thus increasing their potential for accidents. Retesting would correct this by providing drivers with necessary refreshers on safe driving behavior as well as updating them about any new laws or regulations.
I will never forget this one time I sat at the back while my friend was driving a group of us back from the gym. She was supposed to turn right at the light; when the light turned red, she did not complete a stop or look before turning. This mistake resulted in hitting an oncoming car that was traveling 30 over the speed limit. Two cars were written off, two drivers were found at fault, but fortunately no one was seriously hurt. Most people don't take road safety seriously until an accident happens to them or someone close to them. Don't be the example of a stupid death. From that point on, I made sure I never made that mistake and anyone around me as well. These experiences bring home to us the fact that road safety is not only about personal actions but also about the influence we can have on other people. Increasing friends' and family's awareness of safe driving practices can have a ripple effect toward community safety.
For my part, I can take several proactive steps to become a better and safer driver: I can remove distractions on the road. Meaning I will not use my phone, eat, and any other form of activity that will divert your attention from the road. In addition, I'll practice defensive driving, which involves maintaining enough following distance between my vehicle and other vehicles as well as being prepared to take countermeasures in reaction to a situation developing unexpectedly. I keep up with my vehicle by conducting daily checks on its maintenance. This is something that cannot be emphasized more, other than by the importance of having working brakes, well-maintained tires, and functional lights to ensure safe driving. Lastly, I will contribute towards the safety of the roads in my community. Educating the community members on adhering to traffic rules, buckling up their seat belts, and ensuring they drive without any alcohol influence. Additionally, such contributions would be impactful if supplemented by attending road safety campaigns. Those are some of the things those close to me have done which has shown me improvement in myself.
Driver's education has assumed an immense significance in decreasing the number of road fatalities since it forms the basis for capable and responsible driving. This, however, will need to be supplemented by better infrastructure, tighter traffic regulations, and successful public awareness campaigns to effect drastic reductions in deaths on roads. It is, for this reason, that personal experiences usually tend to bring out the necessity of these measures and act as a trigger for installing safer driving habits. Therefore, contributing to a better driving environment can take place in a big way through learning continuously, avoiding distractions, driving defensively, and maintaining his or her vehicle. A joint effort in this endeavor is surely bound to bring down the numbers of traffic fatalities and hence work with a culture of safer and more responsible drivers.
