There are many ways to reduce the number of accidents resulting in road death. One of the more obvious ways to improve vehicular safety is to wear your seatbelt. You should also always make sure your airbag is in good condition. Roadway conditions are more out of our control and primarily in the local government's hands. Many times, the roads will have potholes that can cause accidents. Outside the government's hands, there would be more problems with reckless driving in harsh weather conditions. A common one is black ice because you cannot see it on the road. Outlook is one of the most important things we carry with us. People have to want to be safe drivers. A good start would be spending as much time practicing behind the wheel supervised as possible. There is someone there to teach you how to be safe and responsible. You should never get behind the wheel, intoxicated or incapacitated. I’m sure everyone who has a license knows there is never a circumstance where drinking then/while driving is okay. It can also help limit the number of passengers in your car. If all your friends are in the car, you may focus on talking to them rather than ensuring you get to your location safely. Drive during the day rather than at night. At night, your field of vision decreases, and you have more trouble seeing where you are going. You are at much greater risk of hitting something. Always drive defensively. Assume every other driver on the road is a worse driver than you and will do the wrong thing. This could save you from a lot of accidents. An example is when someone runs a stop sign when you do not have one. Do not assume they will stop, yield, and ensure before you continue forward.
I have never been in a car accident, but I have experienced one of my friends driving irresponsibly. My friend got her license the first week and picked me up from my house. We would stay at her grandparents' house for a week and housesit while they were on vacation. Late that night, we decided we wanted to get a milkshake. We were so excited to be on our own and independent. We were staying in our own house with no one to answer to. When we left, she turned the radio up. We were yelling over the top of it to have a conversation, and she was speeding. Her grandparents live around a curve, and we took it extra fast. At that moment, she started texting while driving. The next thing I knew, we were looking at a tree. Thank God she stopped right before we hit it, but we were only an inch away. The reckless decisions made that night could have ended with some pretty severe injuries.
When I think about how to be a better driver, I think of my bad habits. I could reduce my speeding, phone usage, and how loud I listen to my music. Recently, I have been trying to cut down on my speeding. It is hard to do independently, so I have to set my cruise control. I feel much safer when I go to the proper speed limit.
