Driving has become a fundamental part of modern society in ways of transportation over the past century. However, this comes with significant risks for new drivers. With each year, thousands of people lose their lives due to preventable accidents simply because of reckless driving and lack of driving education. Myself as a driver with a learners permit and pursuing a drivers license, recognize the importance of driver's education for inexperienced drivers. With new drivers being educated, the number of preventable deaths each year can be significantly reduced.
To begin with, driver's education plays an important role in providing new, inexperienced drivers with the essential skills and knowledge on how to navigate the road safely. Drivers education teaches new drivers, such as myself, defensive driving techniques, such as how to properly recognize driving hazards, maintaining a safe following distance to prevent tailgating, and how to adapt to challenging road conditions like rain, snow, or fog. In addition, these education courses instruct students on the rules of the road, traffic laws, meanings of all of the various signs, and how to properly operate a vehicle while maintaining it as well. This information is significantly important given inexperienced drivers, especially teenagers like myself, there is a higher risk rate for serious or even fatal accidents. Multiple studies have shown that new drivers who have completed driver education courses that go in depth have significantly lower accident rates compared to those who don't receive this education. Furthermore, by equipping drivers with this vital information and skills set, these courses will lead to responsible driving behaviors, and will set the foundation that will last the driver for a lifetime. Also, drivers education programs also cover other critical topics, that will be extremely vital to learn for new drivers, such as distracted or impaired driving and the dangers of it, importance of wearing a seat belt before driving, and what to do in scenarios of emergency situations that they might not learn without guidance in driver's education programs. As I learned in my driver's education class, if a water bottle was to roll under my break and get stuck, I would be taught how to safely dislodge the bottle without losing control of my vehicle. Another scenario, which I personally experienced, is how to jump start a dead battery in a car which has proven to be extremely useful. Moreover, knowing how to handle the presence of an emergency vehicle as well as techniques on how to pass and pull over for law enforcement is addressed in drivers education courses. Knowing these procedures and skills can help new, inexperienced drivers remain calm, feel comfortable, and act appropriately when driving or facing risky scenarios. By equipping new drivers with this wide range of knowledge, drivers education programs play a dominant role in promoting safety on the road, and dramatically preventing deaths caused by automobile accidents each year.
While improvings inexperienced drivers' education is most definitely crucial, but there are other key steps in reducing the number of driving-related fatalities that can be implemented as well. One important approach is having law enforcement and legislation have an even more vital role. By placing stricter driving laws and penalties around dangerous, reckless driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving by cellular devices, and driving under the influence. This will send a clear message and encourage more responsible and safe driving habits while regarding others well-being. Meanwhile, increased law enforcement intervention and the use of multiple methods like sobriety checkpoints, tickets for not wearing a seat-belt, and red-light cameras can efficiently prevent reckless actions. In addition, another approach is strengthening graduated drivers programs or (GDL) laws, which slowly introduces new drivers to the responsibility of driving. These programs typically do include restrictions such as, limits on driving during night time, number of passengers allowed to decrease risk of peer pressure to pursue risky actions, and curfew. Fortunately enough, graduated drivers laws are present in my state, which helps and guides new driver's like myself to gain experience gradually and feel comfortable while driving safely. Enhancing infrastructure can also be another critical measure. Designing roads with ample lighting, clear signage, and placing physical safety barriers can significantly reduce the errors made by drivers. Finally, having public awareness campaigns can help highlight the very real human-costs of reckless drive. Overall, multi-faceted steps such as addressing driver education, improving infrastructure, law enforcement and legislation intervention, licensing and spreading public awareness can decrease the number of lives lost by driving-related accidents
While I have not personally experienced or been involved in a car accident, I have witnessed an incident of irresponsible driving by a family member. Last week, I was in the car with my mother as she was driving us home from the gym. And, I noticed she was visibly distracted, she was talking on her phone while also trying to write stuff down on a notepad. As we approached an intersection, a truck was approaching, and sure enough, just as we were about to enter the intersection, my mother narrowly avoided a collision with the truck. Luckily, my mom was still paying attention to the surroundings, and there was no collision. But, I told mom I'll handle the call and write down the needed stuff. And, I told my mother she needs to refrain from trying to multitask while driving as it is very dangerous. She agreed and recognized her actions were unsafe and irresponsible. Moreover, being alert and preventing accidents should always be a driver's top priority.
Finally, I believe as drivers, including new drivers, such as myself, we all have a responsibility to be considerate of one another on the road. Whether it's following these steps such as yielding the right of way for pedestrians and cyclists, being more vigilant and attentive on the road, maintaining a safe following distance, and properly using turn signals. By prioritizing the safety of fellow road users, we can work together efficiently to reduce the number of deaths caused by vehicle-related accidents.
