“About 36,164 motor vehicle crashes occurred every day across the U.S.” Drivers Education would decrease this number significantly in America, if people would comply. I believe there are several benefits to increasing driver education within America.
The first reason I believe driver education is important is because it would decrease the number of deaths. Drivers education's purpose is to educate people how to safely operate motor vehicles on the road. This safety is important for all people on the road. I recently had a very close family relative that was in a car accident. She was flown from the site to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery. She is very lucky to still be alive today. I very strongly believe that this accident could have been avoided if the other driver had taken his driver education more seriously. The other driver was three times over the legal limit for alcohol consumption. This is important because he could have not been aware what the legal limit was. Had this driver been more educated this accident could have been avoided at all costs. Not only is this scenario important there is several researches that support this claim. The Federal Highway Administration found “there were 42,514 deaths from motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2022.” If the United States would increase the requirements of drivers education several crashes could be avoided each year. Increasing this requirement would help educate people how to drive safer on the roads as well as legal regulations on the roads.
The first step that the United States should take to reduce the number of deaths in mandated driver education classes on a regular basis. I believe as people age they forget the crucial information they are taught in drivers education. By increasing the mandate to update your license then more drivers on the road would be higher educated on safety regulations.
When I was 16 my family was in a car wreck on the highway. During this wreck we hit a deer head on and totaled our car. Although this crash did not involve any other drivers on the road, drivers' education could have still been put to good use in this situation. If my father had more recently taken drivers education it is likely he would have been more confident on what to do in that situation. As stated above a very close family member was also recently in a car wreck. This wreck could have also been avoided had she been educated on how to react in that situation. This wreck could have also been avoided if the other driver was informed of laws and regulations.
There are several steps drivers can take to ensure they are safer drivers on the road. The first step is ensuring they are not distracted. I believe the increase of technology has led to more users being distracted while driving. This distraction could be eliminated with an increase of punishment. I also believe driving under the influence should be more heavily punished. Driving under the influence not only affects the people in your car, but all people on the road. If law enforcement more heavily punished and enforced this law, it would lead to all people on the road being safer. The final step that would lead to safer drivers is the encouragement of seatbelts. My aunt was told several times if she was not wearing her seat belt that wreck would have killed her. There are several other instances where this occurs. By encouraging more people to wear their seatbelts it would lead to everyone being safer on the road. Although the regulation does not necessarily directly correlate to safer drivers, it still leads to people being safe on the road. By enforcing punishment for people who do not wear their seat belt, it would result in more people wearing their seat belt. This law could also be enforced through the production of motor vehicles. Although there are currently regulations and laws, I believe within the vehicle has the most impact on passengers. If a vehicle did not move until all passengers were buckled that would be the most impactful way to ensure everyone in the vehicle buckled.
In conclusion I believe there are many reasons that driver education is important. Similarly I believe there are many ways to encourage drivers education, as well as increase the safety of people on the road. This safety problem is increasing with time, it is crucial we begin taking action to diminish these fatalities.
