Driver education plays a crucial role in reducing traffic-related deaths and improving overall road safety. Driver education classes are first introduced to teenagers in high school. This is important because teenagers can earn their license at the age of 16. Ages 16-19 have the highest rates of deaths due to distracted driving. The importance of driver education can include insurance benefits, teaching students how to change their oil or tire, and developing group learning from their peers. Driver education courses are still offered in high schools and private schools across the state of Georgia.
Two reasons why driver education programs are important are teaching safe driving practices and understanding defensive driving. Teaching safe driving includes understanding road signs, traffic laws, and the proper techniques for handling a car in various conditions such as rain, snow, or night driving. When drivers are equipped with this knowledge, they are less likely to engage in risky behaviors like speeding, tailgating, or failing to yield.
Defensive driving teaches drivers to anticipate and react to potential hazards, such as other drivers' mistakes or unpredictable road conditions. Defensive driving techniques, like maintaining a safe following distance, scanning the road ahead for potential threats, and being aware of blind spots, can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents.
Steps to be taken to reduce accidents are obeying traffic laws. This means following the rules of traffic lights, road signs, and driving within the speed limit. Another important rule is to avoid driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Driving under the influence can impair your driving and seriously harm other drivers or pedestrians. There has been a report of 11,000 deaths each year related to driving under the influence. In the state of Georgia, a DUI stays on your record permanently. Last but not least, refrain from using your phone while driving. Texting and driving is a common issue among the ages of 15-30. More than half of related incidents or deaths from driving are within this age group. In Georgia, the first offense includes paying a $50 fine and a point on your license. The second offense includes paying a $100 fine with two points added to your license. Third offense: the driver must pay a $150 fine, and 3 points will be added to your license.
I’ve had my license since I was 18 years old. I’ve traveled with many friends on road trips or to quickly run errands. This particular night felt like any other night, simply driving to the grocery store. One rainy night in December 2019, I experienced my first car accident. My ex-boyfriend was driving, and I was the passenger. The roads were slippery, and it was difficult to see through the windshield from all the heavy rain. As were driving, a pickup truck suddenly pulled out from a stop sign and slammed into our vehicle. The passenger side received the most damage. All the windows shattered, and I was hit in the face by glass and the rearview mirror. The driver of the truck didn’t receive any damage to his vehicle and received no injuries. The authorities were called, and we were rushed to the hospital to check for external injuries. I was grateful I was alive and not seriously hurt, nor was my ex-boyfriend. After this incident, I suffered from PTSD and was terrified of driving in the rain for years to come. I hope this experience taught the young driver to be more aware of other vehicles on the road and to always take extra precautions when driving in severe weather.
Being a better and safer driver, as well as encouraging others to adopt safer driving practices, involves a combination of self-awareness, responsible driving habits, and proactive actions to promote safety. Practice safe driving. Always be aware of weather and road conditions. Avoid aggressive driving and road rage. Constantly check your mirrors to ensure you're allowed to make a turn or switch lanes. Avoiding distractions while operating a vehicle. Refrain from using your cell phone, applying makeup, eating, or changing the radio. Always wear your seatbelt and encourage passengers in the car to do so as well. Seatbelts save lives and can prevent further injury if an accident occurs.
By helping others become safe drivers, I must lead by example. If I have my nieces or nephews in the vehicle, I always practice safe driving. Children learn from adults' behavior. Lastly, becoming an advocate for safe driving. During the spring semester, I plan on advocating to start a driver's education class for college students at my university.
