The number one cause of deaths for teenagers in America is car accidents. Everyday teenagers ages 16-19 are involved in car accidents. Many are severely injured. Some don’t even make it. No one would ever want to lose a loved one because of a car wreck. By implementing and enforcing stricter laws against distracted driving. And offering Driving education programs for teenagers who are just starting to get on the road. We may just able to reduce the number of teen deaths.
Initially, the first step to do for reducing accidents because of driving is having exceptional driver education programs for drivers that are just starting to get on the road. Now what is the importance of driver education in reducing the number of deaths? Driving is not just about getting in a car and starting it. It’s also about learning about and obeying all the traffic rules in. And knowing things such as how to change a tire if your car has a flat tire. “The purpose of Driver’s Education is to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for vehicle safety for both as a driver and as a pedestrian.” In Driver education courses they have local law enforcement come in speak with the students about the consequences of irresponsible driving. And since a lot of people who were involved in a car collision are either traumatized, injured, or die. Driver Education courses should have guest speakers come in to speak and give their testimony. That would for sure be impactful towards the people in the course. Other steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. Are stricter laws towards reckless and distracted driving. Speeding tickets should be more expensive, people should receive a ticket for speaking on the phone or texting on the phone. And charges with driving under the Influence should be stricter.
When it comes to this, I tend to be an advocate. Because I have been in an experience where I have had family members in a car accident. My parents were on their way home from a trip. The road was very foggy. When all of a sudden, a car comes right in front of them and hits them. They were rushed to the hospital. My father broke his legs. And my mom had bruises all over her face. At the hospital the doctor asked if my mom was pregnant. My mom was not pregnant but for some reason my dad told the doctor that my mom was pregnant. Having said this when they ran a couple tests on my mom, they put a vest on her stomach to protect the baby from the radiation caused by the machines that they were using to run the tests on her. The last test that they did on my mom was a pregnancy test to make sure if she was pregnant or not. When the results came, they came out positive. My mother was actually pregnant. However, the doctor told her to not get her hopes up the chances of the baby surviving were little and If the baby did survive it was going to be born with some sort of disability or illness. Fast forward 17 years later. I am sitting here writing this essay meaning the baby that my mom gave birth to the baby she was pregnant with. The baby was born healthy and had no disabilities. And lastly the baby that my mom was pregnant with was me. After hearing that story, it made want to be a responsible driver so that I would not get in an accident or cause an accident it made me think. “What steps can I take to be a better and safer driver and help others stay safe on the road.” The steps I will take to be a better driver would be obeying traffic laws, no texting and driving and no driving under the influence.
In Conclusion, it is possible to decrease the number of deaths caused by distracted and reckless driving. By having good Driver Education Programs that will teach students about the rules of the road. And by enforcing stricter punishments against actions that can cause car crashes. Starting campaigns and spreading the word against distracted driving can also help reach a lot of people. And lastly us as individuals can contribute in reducing car accidents by being responsible and safe drivers.
