education is the one universal course that indoctrinates
inexperienced drivers of all
ages
about the serious side of operating a motor vehicle. It is a
comprehensive course of
instruction
that includes classroom works and behind the wheel instruction.
Drivers Ed can
take
an individual with essentially no experience or knowledge of how to
operate a motor
vehicle
and turn that person into a respectable driver in a matter of weeks.
More importantly,
it
stresses defensive driving as its cornerstone. Defensive driving
teaches that safety is
paramount
when driving a car and that it is not good enough to be a good and
safe driver,
you
must look out for the other drivers on the road as well. This
fundamental of safe driving
that
gets drilled into you at Drivers Ed most certainly has saved
countless lives over the
years.
Moreover, there should be a national laws that prohibit the use of
mobile phones while operating any motor vehicle. Distracted driving
has become one of the biggest contributors to fatal accidents,
especially among teen drivers, and it must be addressed directly with
stiff fines and license suspensions. To assist those drivers who rely
on mobile phones to provide
directions,
it should be standard equipment on all new cars to have directions
and driving
routes
displayed on a center console display that is big enough to be seen
in the driver’s
peripheral
vision, without taking their eyes off the road. Lastly, the penalties
for driving under
the
influence should become much stiffer, including a mandatory one-year
forfeiture of one’s
license
for any underage operator who is driving under the influence.
When
I was about seven years-old I can vividly remember getting rear ended
by a full-sized
bus.
This day forever altered the life of me and my mother as we were both
rushed to the
hospital
in an ambulance. My mother to this day still has a back neck and his
pains caused
by
accident. I also believe the impact of this accident has altered the
way my back
developed
as a child, causing me back pains up through my early teenage years
until now.
This
could have all been avoided if the driver of the bus was not
distracted and paying better
attention
to the road. Furthermore, whenever I am in the car with family or
friends who may
be
fumbling with their phones I always voice my opinion and suggest that
they let me find the music, send their text or plug in the directions
for them.
I
vow to set the example and not drive distracted, leaving my mobile
phone in my purse
whenever
possible. I will also prevent notifications from even coming through
to me, so I
can’t
get distracted if my phone has to be out in the open. Moreover, I
want to instill this
same
behavior in my family and friends to ensure that none us become
victimized by
distracted
driving. Lastly, I am the generation that has grown up with Uber and
I pledge that
any
time I am partaking in alcoholic beverages I will do so either with a
designated driver in
our
party, or will use a ride-sharing service.
