2024 Driver Education Round 3
Driving Like a Hero

Driver education is important in reducing the number of accidents and fatalities on the roads. New drivers have no experience that will help them handle unexpected situations; however, driver education can help prepare for complex situations and thus minimize dangerous mistakes. The Teenage Defensive Driving Program taught me how to go about high-stress situations by providing me with advanced techniques for specific situations. Before taking the course I underestimated how complex driving can be. Looking back, I feel more equipped than ever, ready to react to potential hazards. Over all, this experience has made me a safer and more confident driver.
The most important thing that a new driver can learn is situational awareness. During that program I was in educational exercises that simulated hazardous conditions. For example, there was a skid pad that taught me the best way to react and get back on track. In another scenario there were cones on one path that split into separate paths. The goal of this was quick reactions to a pretend object(e.g. mattress) that fell off a truck and we had to dodge it.This training has given both confidence while also demonstrating the importance of staying alert and avoiding any distractions. I never could have imagined how dangerous driving could be before this class, I now make the conscious effort to be self-aware and avoid distractions.
Despite the benefits driver's education provides, there are still thousands of lives that are lost each year because of reckless driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA), speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving are the leading causes of road fatalities. How is that this can be such an issue but there are drivers who refuse to change their driving behaviors? If educators teach driving and address the habits of unsafe behaviors, what else can be done to decrease casualties on the road? It may be difficult, but I think in order to create some action we must talk about the hard stories. If we can connect with young drivers on a deeper, emotional level it might just be enough to make a difference. Sadness and empathy are strong emotions, and by talking about or showing educational videos about the effects of distracted driving might be the push we need to decrease road casualties.
I personally have no stories of car accidents, the only thing close would be hitting a deer but anyone in the Midwest knows there is no escape from a deer. On the other hand, I have a close friend of mine who was recently involved in a minor accident that was caused by distracted driving. It was a rear-ending accident that involved roughly 5 different cars. This occurred after school when everyone was trying to rush home and get through the red light. It all happens in a split second and I guess she did not see the car breaking in front of her. Thankfully no one was seriously injured, but the incident was a serious wake-up call for both of us. This event further reinforced the concept that you need to always be at attention behind the wheel, and any irresponsible decisions behind the wheel could be your last.
Most drivers could never believe it would be them in a crash until it happens. Every driver needs to be safe, not just the majority. Some say “If everyone is a defensive driver I can be reckless,” but that will never be true. I have been committed to being a safe driver by practicing defensive techniques like keeping my head on a swivel while also focusing on the road. I also believe that there is some importance of educating others, so I have shared many tips that I have obtained from the Teenage Defensive Driving Program as well as encouraging them to follow safe driving behaviors. As a teenager, spreading awareness is one of the only ways I can contribute to driver safety.
Looking to the future, I see driver education as a vital component of public safety. We need change when it comes to driving, there should not be thousands of deaths per year by something that is within our control. It has come to a time where advanced technology is able to help with tools such as driver-assistance systems; however, one should remember that human judgment is a big part and the driver-assistance systems can not compensate for everything. Additionally, I believe that it would be beneficial and save lives if we could expand access to programs such as the Teenage Defensive Driving Program. There are many barriers such as financial barriers that can restrict a young driver from experiencing such training.
In conclusion, driver education is not just about learning how to operate a vehicle but how to stay safe and keep others safe once on the road. Driver education is extremely important and should not be underestimated. We need to start prioritizing driver education and promote its importance to make the roads safer. Automobiles are powerful and can be very dangerous, so next time you go out on the road remember what Uncle Ben said, “with great power comes great responsibility.”
