2024 Driver Education Round 3
Driving Responsibly: A Personal Commitment to Safe Roads
Janea Brunson
Dallas, Texas
Every time I get behind the wheel, I remind myself that driving is more than just a way to get from point A to point B—it’s a responsibility to safeguard my life and the lives of others on the road. As someone who drives frequently, mainly through the unpredictable streets of Dallas, Texas, I’ve made it my mission to practice and promote safe driving. My experiences—both personal and observed—have shaped this commitment, emphasizing how crucial it is to remain vigilant and responsible behind the wheel.
Navigating the Roads of Dallas
Driving in Dallas is a challenging feat. Known for its sprawling highways and bustling streets, Dallas is also one of Texas's most dangerous places to drive. In 2022, Dallas County reported 37,699 total crashes, including 216 fatalities and 1,101 serious injuries, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. These staggering numbers highlight our city's urgent need for safer driving practices.
Several factors contribute to these high statistics, including distracted driving, speeding, and impaired driving. Texas consistently leads the nation in fatal crashes involving drunk driving, and in Dallas alone, alcohol-related incidents accounted for 23% of all traffic fatalities in 2022. Additionally, the prevalence of distracted driving continues to rise, with cell phone use and texting contributing to countless accidents. These realities make navigating Dallas’s roads a daily challenge that demands patience, vigilance, and defensive driving skills.
To help track my habits, I use an app, which rates my driving based on factors like hard braking, phone usage, and overall attentiveness. My score currently sits at 4 out of 5 stars, a rating I take pride in. However, I recognize there’s room for improvement. While I make every effort to minimize distractions, there are times when I rely on my phone for navigation due to Dallas's complex road layouts. I prefer using my car’s Apple CarPlay for hands-free directions, but technology isn’t always reliable. When glitches arise, I sometimes need to adjust my navigation, which affects my Snapshot score manually. I strive to address these issues safely, pulling over when necessary to minimize risk.
A Personal Encounter with a Drunk Driver
In July 2024, just two months after purchasing my new car, I had a close call with a drunk driver who side-swiped me. Although I was fortunate to walk away unscathed, the experience left me shaken and deeply aware of how someone else’s irresponsible decisions could have ended tragically. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities, and Texas ranks among the worst states for alcohol-related crashes.
This incident reaffirmed my commitment to safe driving—for my own sake and everyone sharing the road. By contrast, I’ve also experienced the rewards of responsible driving. This summer, I successfully completed a round trip from Texas to North Carolina and back without a single issue. Long-distance driving requires a combination of preparation, focus, and defensive driving, and I’m proud that my dedication to these principles ensured a safe journey.
Lessons from Personal and Shared Experiences
My commitment to road safety is further reinforced by the experiences of friends and loved ones. One of my closest friends was involved in a severe car accident years ago because they weren’t wearing a seatbelt. They were ejected through the windshield and miraculously survived, but the ordeal left lasting scars—both physical and emotional. Witnessing their recovery underscored the importance of even the most straightforward safety measures, like buckling up whenever you’re in a car.
More recently, I lost a college classmate to a drunk-driving incident. Their life was cut short because of someone else’s reckless choices. This tragedy hit close to home and reminded me of the devastating consequences that can arise when people fail to take driving seriously.
The Role of Driver Education and Technology
Driver education is a powerful tool for reducing the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads. Teaching drivers—especially new ones—about the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, the importance of seatbelts, and the value of defensive driving can save countless lives. Technology also plays a vital role. My experience with Progressive’s Snapshot app has been eye-opening, as it provides real-time feedback on my driving habits and incentivizes me to improve. While no system is perfect, tools like this encourage mindfulness and accountability, helping drivers like me stay committed to safe practices.
My Commitment
For me, driving responsibly is a promise I’ve made to myself, my loved ones, and the countless strangers I share the road with every day. Whether I’m avoiding distractions, ensuring my navigation tools are set before I start driving or encouraging others to buckle up, I aim to lead by example.
The roads of Dallas—and everywhere else—can be unpredictable and even dangerous. Still, by staying focused and prioritizing safety, I believe we can all contribute to a culture of responsible driving. My personal experiences, from surviving a drunk-driving incident to mourning the loss of a friend, fuel my determination to make the roads safer for everyone.
Safe driving isn’t just a personal responsibility—it’s a commitment to creating a safer, more mindful world for all. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to take this responsibility seriously, making our roads less dangerous and our communities stronger.
