Driver education has a significant importance in todays world. There are approximately 4,244,713 licensed drivers in my home state of Colorado alone. If every one of them is on the road at the same time, that is a potential of 4,244,713 accidents to take place daily. That puts every driver on the road at risk. This year there have been over 588 fatal car accidents in Colorado alone.
I took around 60 hours total of driver’s education course before getting my license at 16. I am extremely grateful that I did, considering that young drivers who have not completed driver's education are 75 percent more likely to get a traffic ticket, 24 percent more likely to be involved in a fatal or injury accident and 16 percent more likely to have an accident (Study: Driver’s ed significantly reduces teen crashes, tickets- Office of University Communications University of Nebraska–Lincoln 2015). Receiving education from an expert in the field was a lot more helpful to me than just logging my parent supervised hours.
I was able to get a greater understanding of the laws of the road and how they applied to every situation while driving. It was a relief to have help from someone who dedicates their career to safe driving. The guidance I received was priceless. It made me a safer, more confident driver because I was better informed and so much more comfortable behind the wheel of my vehicle. It allowed me real-time education with someone who could guide me through the situation and bring me to a safe outcome. I was taught to drive with focus and avoid distractions and that has helped me so far to avoid any accidents or tickets. Therefore, I am doing my part to reduce traffic deaths one drive at a time.
I have been in the car when one of my friends has made the decision to drive irresponsibly. Some of them have tried to text and drive or didn’t observe the speed limit. Because of my driver’s education experience, I was able to make it clear to them that their decisions were putting numerous others at risk. In most cases they were open to my thoughts and made changes to their driving mistakes. In one other case I had to leave the vehicle and call my parents for a safe ride home. I have also witnessed some of my peers drinking and then attempting to drive. I refused to get in a car with them and told the appropriate people to get them home safely and keep them from getting behind the wheel.
I am always considerate of the rules of the road and I know that my safe driving habits may save my life and the lives of others someday. I take driving very seriously and know that it is a privilege to drive. I know this because of drivers ed and I am forever grateful for the experience!
